Make your Vista Recovery Disks from Vista if you didn't already so you have a path back to factory condition.

Then boot the Win7 DVD, select Custom Install, then Drive Options to delete all partitions, create new one(s) as you desire, then format before installing to first partition. The DVD will see Vista to allow use of Upgrade version key, even if you delete it using the Options.

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/70248-troubleshooting-msconfig.html

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly. http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

Then save a Win7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement using DVD or Repair CD. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html

In order to still be seeing Vista on the system you would have had to have seen a second primary created at some point for 7 to install to that rather then replacing the existing Vista installation. That came about by selecting the wrong partition when using the custom install option.

A good look at how your drive(s) are layed with a screenshot of the Disk Management tool will show where you made the initial error as well as how to restructure partitions the way you will want them. Before simply wiping your drive you first need to have a place to back things upto as well as decide on whether or not the drive will see one large single primary or be split for storing files on a second partition if you are running a one drive pc.

For creating and storing a full system that will require a second hard drive(internal preferred or external) for storing an image that can be anywhere from 85gb+ to over 100gb in size depending on the size of the main drive and how much is present on it. A look at the DM using the snipping tool already included in Vista and 7 both to post a screen here would help however. http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...ed-method-uploading-posting-screen-shots.html
