Installing a ssd

Hi all I wanted to ask a question , I have a computer up and running with a WD hdd sata3 64meg cash , IF i want to install a ssd can i just unplug the hd and install the ssd and put the OS on it and use it as the boot drive ,, and thin plug my hd back in? so I what i am asking can the OS be on the hhd and ssd, my hd has a lot on it and sorry if this is a dumd question its some thing i just dont know about thanks

The ideal way to use your SSD is to put the OS and programs on it. Put all the docs, pictures etc on the HD. The programs and the OS need to be on the same partition because of the OS registry. You don't say how big your SSD is. If it is a 120 GB, you should not have any problem at all getting the programs on it. There are guys here that have smaller SSD that have the setup the way I describe. How big is your SSD? I know you are trying to avoid reinstalling all of your programs, but the way you are describing won't work. The programs would have no association with the OS.

ok thanks for the info its just i got a lot on the hdd adobe cs5 beta cs6 lr3 games swtor bf3 bf2 bfbc2 and some nikon programs , so what i understand all programs need to on the ssd and all pic's and music etc can be on the hdd. The SSD is a corsair gt 120 g

Unplug the HD, plug in the SSD to first SATA port for it's type, install Win7.

After install, plug back in the HD, in Win7 on SSD browse to the User folders on HD Win7, rightclick to link them to related Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums. This is by far the easiest method.

You can also boot into Win7 on the HD if needed using the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key given on your first boot screen. However I would migrate all programs over to the SSD, then when ready move the User folders off externally to wipe it with Diskpart Clean Command, reformat in Disk Mgmt as a data HD, move your User folders back on and relink them to libraries if necessary.

If you run out of space on the HDD I'd reinstall lesser used Programs to the HD to save SSD space, however this will affect their speed.
