Installing an upgrade Win 7

Gregrocker, I have not heard of that ever. Could you post some links or point me in a direction to find out more about corruption from transferring settings? Files can be corrupt of course but I thought the settings were checked on import for viability.

Any setting that is imported will be allowed in my experience. This means that incorrect settings or, more likely, multiple flawed or incorrect settings can cause Win7 to run as hampered as these same settings caused in Vista. I call this "creeping corruption," another good reason to get an image shortly after install and setup.

This is one reason most tech experts suggest a clean install and regular clean reinstalls (now accomplished easier with built-in drive imaging), so that a fresh start can be made for both the OS, its settings, programs and their settings. By importing incorrect or badly made settings, it defeats the pupose of a fully fresh start for both the OS and its programs.

What check for "viability" occurs when settings are imported as I have not heard of this?

It's not the one that I would get. The fact that it is System Builders mean that once installed, you can never install it on another machine, and upgrading the machine that you have, may cause it to become invalid.

Unless you want DVDs for both x32 and x64...something like this:

Very few. Just in case, have your wireless driver on a stick or CD so you can get online quickly to check optional Windows Updates for any newer drivers than installer provides.

Any drivers missing in Device Manager can then be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your computer or device model.

I would not change out any drivers given by Windows 7 unless performance dictates. During beta I would provide chipset using XPthink and had to roll it back on many different models because MS's were better.

Hi Bonkers,

It is a good idea to run the Upgrade Advisor (Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows) before moving from Vista to Windows 7. It will scan your system and let you know if any changes need to be made before the upgrade. If you choose to do a clean install, make sure you back up your files and programs to an external hard drive first, as they will be wiped from the computer during a clean installation.

As far a drivers go, you can check your software / hardware in the Windows 7 Compatiblity Center (Windows 7 Compatibility: Software Programs and Hardware Devices: Find Updates, Drivers, and Downloads) to make sure they are compatible with Windows 7. After the upgrade, you can have Windows find your drivers for you - Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware.

The only drive I'm concerned about id for the ethernet card. Just want to make sure I can connect to the internet. As for saving any important files, nothing really to save.

Another question on an upgrade........what about viruses, spyware, adware before the upgrade. Do I need to take care of those things first, or will they be gone after the upgrade. Thanks for all the info! Everyone has been a great help! Glad to be part of this site! B-72

I would uninstall MacAfee using free Revo Uninstaller in Advanced mode to remove all of it's remaining files and registry entries (listed in bold).

Install Microsoft Security Essentials in about a minute, allow it to update and run a scan. Then turn off it's Real Time Protection during the Upgrade.

I doing this for my friend. Just got his Dell system. I'm looking at these disks he has. Has an upgrade assistant disk. Should I load that too? Says to load it first. Has Windows 7 drivers and Windows 7 applications on it. Thanks.

I would only use the Drivers/Apps Cd after install for any favorite apps he uses and wants migrated to new install.

If any drivers are missing after Win7 install and optional Updates which supply newer drivers, then find them on the Dell Support Downloads website for his tag number. Don't change out any drivers given by Installer or Updates unless there is a performance reason.

Well i'm in process right now of installing the upgrade. I'm at the point where it asks me where do I want to install windows. Partition 1, OEM {39MB} {RESERVED} won't let me, Partition 2, {14.6 GIG} recovery, won't let me, or Partition 3, system {451.1 GIG} will let me.I wanted to clean install this with no partition. At the bottom it says to make changes to partitions,restart windows from the installation disk. Can I do this with this disk?

Try to boot the Windows 7 install DVD so you can use Custom>Drive Tools to Delete all partitions, create a new one, then format before install.

Finally got around to looking into File and Transfer Wizard concerning corrupted files.
GR is correct, you can import corruption that way.
There is a utility that parses them and can repair a corrupted file from MS, but it is now discontinued.

Suggest you install your programs slowly with adequate time to gauge performance after each.

Just wanted to know about Revo uninstaller. Is it good to use this for all program uninstalls? Worked great on McAfee! Thanks.

It's good for any program. It simply scans for leftover files and registry entries after running the programs's uninstaller.
