Installing DirectX

Hi Folks,

I'm not sure if this is the right topic under which i should ask this question. But here i need some guidance...i got DirectX 9 & 10 but after running the setup.exe as "run as administrator" after following all the instruction & in the end on DirectX window its "setup is complete" but i can't see it in installed programs.... so here i need help what am i doing wrong???....i installed both 9 & 10 or should do it in step by step please let me know that as well....

You don't have to install older/previous versions of DirectX. Every Windows 7 installation includes the latest version of DirectX (DirectX 11). Downgrading DirectX 11 by installing DirectX 9 or 10, which is what you're trying to do is wrong, as it could corrupt the default DirectX files. As of now, there are only a few games which support DX11 (especially those games released sometime in 2010 such as Battlefield Bad Company 2, Aliens vs. Predator, etc.) but unsupported games are actually playable and the improvements in graphics (water quality, skies, etc.) are quite noticeable. Games that are scheduled for release later this year or in the future will support DX11.

Click the Start Orb and type 'dxdiag'. Hit the Enter key and you should be able to see your DirectX version at the bottom, under System Information.

Thanks frzwin7 for the info. i was aware of this bu wasn't sure of how to check this....but i still i got a problem & that is that the movies on any media player is not 100% clear & on the edges its little blurred....i installed my OS 2 days ago after it failed to kick off after a reboot (earlier i had Win 7 only but had some changes made so reboot the pc) & i had DirectX 9 & 10 installed then & all type of videos were crystal clear...how can i solve this problem...btw i just checked & yeah my OS has DirectX 11...

You won't be able to use all features of DX11 as your graphics card nVidia GeForce 9100 doesn't support it

Yeah you are right yowanvista...it seems that's causing the problem btw here is the screenshot, so what should be the solution apart from upgrading to a higher graphics card should i down size the DirectX because that worked for me or any other solution....let me know...will be happy to follow....

if see the edges of character on this image are little blurred & crystal clear as they were before i re-installed my OS...

You can't upgrade laptop graphics cards.

what i meant by upgrading was putting a new graphics card because my motherboard can support nVidia 9 & 100 series graphics card....but i want to know how to resolve this issue to get better result...

Taken from my Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues....

6 - Speaking of DirectX 11 – Just because Windows 7 (and now Vista) is DX11 capable doesn’t mean your games automatically run in DX11 mode!!! In order to run in DX11 (or 10 for that matter) 3 things must happen:

1- The Windows must support the modes – Window 7 and Vista (DX10 & 11)
2- The game must support the Mode(s) - Games with DX11 Support, Games with DX10 Support
3- The video card must support the Mode(s) – ATI 5000 series cards, Nvidia GTX 470, 480 (more?)

If any one of those 3 requirements isn’t met the game defaults to the lowest DX mode possible - DX9 (or lower depending on the game).

Here's an example - You have Fallout 3 (DX10), Windows 7 (DX10 & 11) an ATI X1950 PRO or Nvidia GT 8400 (DX9 cards) - well….Fallout 3 will run in DX9 because the video cards are only capable of running in DX9 mode.

On the other hand, using Fallout 3 (DX10), If we have an ATI 5970 (DX11) and Window 7 (DX10 & 11), the game will run in DX10 mode because the game does not support DX11.

Now, if we have a game like Metro 2033 (DX11), Windows 7 (DX11), and an ATI 5970 (DX11), well…we have all the requirements met and the system will run in full DX11 mode!!!

On the other hand – say you are running a DX10 or 11 game and wish to run in DX 9 – some games like Crysis, Crysis Warhead, or Bioshock will let you by simply right-clicking the game’s .exe and choosing the mode you want to run in. See this post - Force DirectX 9?

So… To sum it up, unless ALL components are DX10 or 11, you are running in DX9 (or lower depending on the game) by default!!!

Again, to sum it up, unless ALL components are DX11 capable, the system will ONLY run in DX mode of the lowest DX component.

Is that a laptop's graphics card you want to upgrade? Laptop components such as the graphics card could not be upgraded anymore and should not be tampered. Only desktop components could be upgraded but that depends on other components. The component(s) that you want to upgrade should also be compatible with other components (e.g. your motherboard should support that component and vice versa, etc.) otherwise it'll fail. If you're on a desktop, it's better to upgrade your graphics card and download up to date drivers to ensure beautiful results.

@frzwin7 its a laptop & my motherboard & other hardware can support nVidia 9 & 100 series....i've noticed that videos on GOM player,WMP,KM PLayer but i guess there seem to be some problem when i watch any video on VLC & i love VLC player, so, how can get the perfect clarity on my VLC like before because my games are running fine (so far)....i checked the settings as well (on VLC) but can't seem to get this right...need some help folks

Does this happen in all videos? Is your graphics driver up to date?

yeah all the video but on VLC (other players are working just fine) & yeah my drivers up-to-date...

Did you try uninstalling, (clearing all the current preferences) and installing the latest vlc? Sometimes some video setting gets screwed up and causes such problems.
