My drive is getting a bit full, and a bit long in the tooth so I wanted to put in a 500GB Seagate one that I bought and haven't used yet. Last time I tried to put the new drive in and restore from a system image, it didn't work and I had an error message about the drive. Sony told me you can only use the exact same drive. I've read elsewhere that cloning to the new drive should get round this, so I cloned the drive using Macrium Reflect Free. All seemed to be fine with the new drive in, but when I went to do a Windows Experience rating it failed to complete and gave me an error message about a driver.

I then did sfc /scannow and it said Windows had corrupt files that couldn't be repaired.

I'm just running CHKDSK now but think I shall probably have to put the old drive back in (again!)

Any suggestions please? I've put new drives in a few computers before but always done a clean instal.

Well I ran the Windows Experience rating again and it was ok. From what I can see there was no problem with the disk check. Ran sfc /scannow again and it still says there are corrupt files that can't be repaired. The laptop now seems to be running really hot so I'm putting my old disc back in again.

I was hoping cloning would work as I'd have so much stuff to reinstall if I did a clean install and only have one further download of my video editing software and no further licences for some games that are no longer available for Windows 7.

Hello?! Just wondered if anyone had any tips on cloning drives or fixing issues afterwards please. Is there anything that might work better than Macrium Reflect? I think the cloning I did wasn't worth trying to fix as the computer was running a bit slower and a bit glitchy. I have the old drive back in now, but really need to put a new hard drive in.

Ok would this work? If I did a clean install of Windows 7 on the new disc and then did my latest system image (done with Windows 7 imaging)? I know there's no point trying to do the system image straight to the new disc as that didn't work last time, hence doing the cloning.
