I do not recall the details surrounding this issue but know this can be done. Perhaps the details of the computer in question that I post here make this a non-issue for me.

Acer TMP645 w/OEM Win7 Pro - Win8 or Win7 Pro were both on OE Toshiba HD and the owner had the choice. I chose to install Win7.

My wife purchased the laptop in 2014 and I want to install a new HD to ensure were are safe. What I cannot recall is how I am supposed to release the activation code for the OS such that the new drive serial number does not create a conflict or confusion for it.

Please advise.

Either image and transfer from the old disk to the new.

Or clean install on the new disk and enter your license key.

It will be fine if it is the same machine. Changing or adding a hard disk won't cause any issues.

Okay. I plan to purchase a Samsung SSD and use the Magician software because i Have had positive experiences with this combination before. I thought MS read the HD serial number and this created a conflict.
