I am trying to install NT 4.0 in VMware player with Windows 7 Home 64 bit system as host. While installing I receive a message during the NT setup that states,

"setup has determined thay your computers startup hard disk is new, or have been erased, or that an operating system is installed on your computer with which Windows NT cannot coexist".

It goes on to state that "continuing may damage or destroy the existing operating system." It continues "if your hard drive is new or has been erased or YOU WANT TO DISCARD ITS CURRENT CONTENT PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE SETUP."

Is this a normal message? I saw a youtube video showing the install of NT 4.0 and did not see the author getting this message. My concern is damaging my host OS(Windows 7) by continuing with the installation.

I tried registering and asking this on the VMWare forum but I was unable to do so.

Any help is appreciated

Hi there
from the vmware player wizard select create new virtual machine
then :

1) select ==> I will install the operating system later ==>next

2) choose windows NT
3) Choose disk size etc etc
4) Finish

Now mount the Win NT disk either as a physical device or as an image
then in the Virtual Machine BIOS select boot from CD / DVD

You're good to go.

Cheers

Thanks Jimbo.

I created the NT machine as you show but I still need to install the operating system. How do I access the virtual machines BIOS so I can boot from CD/DVD? Will booting from CD allow for installation?

My big concern is the message about already having an operating system on the computers startup hard disk that NT cannot coexist and continuing may damage the operating system during the NT setup that I encountered on my first attempt. Is this a typical alert message during NT installation? And should I ignore it?

Also, if I do get NT installed, if I want the hard drive space back later how does one uninstall NT? Do I just delete the NT virtual machine and it will remove the NT operating system as well?

Thank you.
