I wanted to upgrade my computer to Windows 7 since xp is not going to be supported any more so I ordered some software on line, not understanding what exactly I was buying. The software came and had all this information saying it had to be installed using the OEM preinstallation kit (OPK). I had no idea what that meant. There was a Microsoft link on the box to more information but the link didn't work. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to use this software. I don't want to open the box until I'm sure it should work so I hope someone might understand what I bought and can advise me.
If I bought the wrong software, where exactly can you find Windows 7 software? I went back to the site I bought it from which is actually one of our local stores and all the Windows 7 software say OEM so I assume I can't buy anything different at this particular store.

It`s fine to install oem software, there`s no difference between it and retail software. As long as it came with an activation key you will be fine.

Although once installed, it is bound to that machine.

OEM version becomes locked to the mobo once installed and can only be reinstalled on the same PC. However we get reports that MS will sometimes make exceptions via Phone Activaiton to reactivate it on another PC if the mobo dies.

Be sure when you boot the disk to do a Clean Install Windows 7
that you use the Drive Options pictures in steps 7 and 8 to delete all partitions, create and format New for the fresh install.

Other tips to get and keep a perfect install are the same as for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
