Trying too liven up a laptop (HP Compaq) I bought for my niece 3.5 years ago. I have fitted Samsung SSD and am burning a copy of windows 7 at the moment to install. Why would it be that Belarc Advisor gives the windows key as different to the one on the sticker? We have had the laptop from new and there was a foil and plastic seal over the old HD when I removed it.

First problem I had was that windows booted OK from a DVD I had mad some time back, but then ground to a halt with missing or damaged file.

I then mad another Windows 7 dvd and this time it didn't boot at all I got a message

BOOTMGR is missing
Press any key to restart

any thoughts?

I don't understand. Does it boot from DVD or not? Try to boot another PC from that DVD... just for testing.
