Installing Ubuntu With Windows 7

I have Windows 7 Ultimate on my main computer.

I'm not sure what the feature is called, but I was told that there was an app that would allow me to install another operating system, in my case Ubuntu, so that it is accessible from within Windows 7.

I'm not looking to dual boot, just use it from Windows 7.

What is that app called

Thank you for that link, it looks like that may be the way I will have to do this.

I found what I was thinking of. It's called Virtual Machine, but when I go to the Microsoft site ( Windows Virtual PC: Home Page ) this app only supports Microsoft operating systems.

I guess Microsoft doesn't offer any app to install a non-Microsoft OS?

Both VMWare Player and VirtualBox can be used to install Ububtu 11.04. VMWare Player is the easiest to use but for some reason it won't allow the use of the new desktop (Unity) for me. VirtualBox can. After first complaining that there is no 3D acceleration support once you install the guest enhancements it fires up with no problems.

Do you have to go with a third party solution such as Virtualbox or VMWare or would a Microsoft solution such as Virtual PC work?

I've heard mixed opinions, some say you can install Ubuntu in a Virtual PC on Windows 7 Ultimate, while others say you can? Has anyone managed to do this?

You can install Ubuntu on Microsoft's products...but it doesn't work all that well and they don't really support it.

There is no way that I would use a MS product to do this, when VMWare Player and Oracle VirtualBox do an absolutely incredible job. VMWare Player is the software that I use.
