When I shut down the computer, I get a notice that its installing update 1 of 1. This has occurred 4 out of the last 6 times I have shut down. It completes in a few minutes and proceeds to shut down. I would think that one update would be enought. Any suggestions of what is going on?

This happens on my laptop. I shut it down after every use and get that Windows Update. Sometimes quite a few updates.

I followed the posted suggestions and even did a complete update using my master O/S disk. It worked fine for a while and has now started in again. Any suggestions as to what I can do now?

Are you checking and installing updates while windows is running, do that until it`s done and you shouldn`t have anything installing when you shut down.

I have gone to "Windows Update" and tried to install updates from there but they fail. When I went thru the O/S update using my system O/S disk, I installed a whole bunch of updates at that time. I cannot do it any longer.

I tried an experiment. I went to Windows Update and selected 2 optional updates plus the one that previously failed. The 2 optional ones were successful but the one that failed previously, failed again. The failed updat is an update to Windows Explorer #10. I don't use Explore as my browser and would just as soon delete the update. Any suggestions?

Posting the info requested by Noel would certainly help with diagnosing the problem.

I checked the update history and everyone that has failed has been the one for "Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 for X64 based syustems". That is my system. IE is installed on my system although I never use it.

I downloaded thge Readiness tool you suggested. and selected the appropriate download for my system. It installed apparently properly (it said so) but I cannot locate it anywhere on my system. If it automatically runs, it hasn't improved any. I still can't download IE 10 to update my IE 8. It just won't complete. Is there anyway to delete IE 8 and then download IE 10?

3. Windows Update Error Codes

In your post, you need to specify what error codes/messages you are receiving when an update fails. The screenshot below shows where error codes are displayed:

4. Log Collection

The steps that we have done have limited automated fixing capabilities, however they are excellent diagnostic tools and generate very informative logs.
Navigate to the following folder:
C:\Windows\Logs
Right-click and on the CBS folder and select Copy.
Minimise all open windows and right-click on your Desktop, then select Paste.
Right-click on the CBS folder on your Desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
A file, CBS.zip should appear on your Desktop.

Your post should include the error codes from step #3 and the CBS.zip file created in step #4. Here's how to attach it to your post:

Here goes. There error code I get when the IE 10 update fails is code 9c59. My current IE is version 8. I have even tried updating to version 10 with no success.
I am attaching 2 files. One is the CBS.zip and the other is the system info. Good luck
I tried uploading the 2 files and got the following message;
Server Error

That error is probably from the file size being too large. Do you have a dropbox or onedrive that you can upload the file to and post a link?
