Please help - am in a total quandry!
Recently after a clean install of windows, was dowloading & installing all the updates and Microsoft sneaked in I.E.9 in as an update. I uninstalled I.E.9 from win.upates (but now realize I didn't uninstall the update for I.E.9 KB2761451) along with it, if it matters. Now my toubles began!! These two security updates failed:

KB2544521 - error: 80242016. Security update for I.E. 8 for windows 7x64. . The first time I tried to install it, it said ' it is for a different hardware platform', 2nd. time that it was ' for XP', 3rd. time said that it was 'already installed on this PC' (but it is not in the update history as successful.

KB2598845 - error: 80242016 - Update for I.E.8 compatibility view list for windows 7x64. Install attempt resulted in 'not applicable to your computer'.
At my wits end now, please in dire need of advice.
How and what can I do to fix this?

Question: When I go to 'about I.E.' it makes no mention of SPl though all the updates with SPl were installed successfully. Should it not specify this?

Your help would most appreciated - thanks.

Instaling Update Failures

Hi Noel: I guess that I hastily uninstalled I.E.9--it's just a matter of time before I will have had to install it anyway for safety sake. Usually I check out updates first, but when one has 147 of them, well.....

If I installed the I.E. 9 update that I have in the 'hidden updates', this would eliminate the above problems would it not?

Then I wouldn't have to do the SURT and command tool fixes and just ignore the two failed updates for I.E.8?
I appreciate your helpful info and patience with a 'learning' novice.
Thanks.

Upgrading anything while there are problems with theprevious version is not good practice.
You'd be better to solve the problems now.

Just follow the instructions, and we'll see where we are.

Installing Update Failures

Above is the CBS zip file. I installed SURT and ran it till it said it was done and then I closed it---but where do I find that box that showed the windows update error codes in STEP 3 of instructions that was supposed to be uploaded here also? I thought it would be shown at the end of the scan -- even checked for updates but there were none.

Command Prompt queries: Instructions were copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each
sfc /scannow
That was a bit confusing as all I got was a black window with version 6.1.7601 and C:\Windows\System32>(to which I added sfc /scannow). There was not anything else to "press enter after each". Strange but none of the instruction prompts matched my machine either. Anyway end result was it said that Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violation.
I surely hope that a portion of all this worked out right!! Guess it's obvious that this is my very first Command Prompt!.
Thanks again Noel.

Installing Update Failures

View attachment 244563Noel: Could you please inform me of the outcome of the SURT and Command Prompt scans - and what do I do now?
As am using I.E.8, what do I do now about those failed updates for I.E.8 in the update history - (KB2544521 and KB2598845)? I would really like to get this resolved or is there something wrong with my PC?

Does the SURT icon installed on desktop need to be uninstalled when this is resolved and if so how to do it as it is not in add/remove. (it is 367 mb). CBS file icon on desktop just deleted later on?

I appreciate your help and thanks.

Sorry,I forgot to upload that SURT thing, above.
This is getting to be a bit of a mess - sorry. (not enough time to finish properly).
Thanks again.

There are no problems showing in either the CBS or CheckSUR logs.

Please confirm the running version of IE by going to the 'About Internet Explorer' and noting teh exact build and update version.
Do a fresh Check for updates - do thse two still appear?

Checked for updates and there were not any available. These two still show 'failed' in update history:
KB2544521 - Security update for I.E. 8 for windows 7x64
KB2598845 - Update for I.E.8 compatibility view list for windows 7x64

I did get Hotfix for Windows KB947821 update and afew for Windows Defender.
It seems like when that update installed I.E. 9 it caused a glitch? I.E.9 was installed somewhere in between the above updates for I.E.8.
I.E.8 has been contrary in that it often stops working and has to close (even when I tried to run the 'fixit' tool from updates. Have not added any tool bars to I.E.
Thanks

IE 8 is showing no updates installed at all.
Try this.
Go to Programs & Features > Turn Windows Features on & off.
In there, you'll find Internet Explorer 8 - UNTICK it and click OK.
wait for the uninstall to complete.
reboot TWICE - please wait 10 minutes before the second reboot
now go back in, and TICK it again - wait for the install to complete, and reboot TWICE (with a similar wait).

Now try Windows Update again, and post back with details, and a new screenshot of teh About window.

Did the uninstall & install of I.E.8 and a new screenshot above.
Checked for updates again but there were none available for this PC.

For the heck of it, I downloaded these two updates from Microsoft.com & tried to install but it either said 'not applicable for your computer' or 'it is on your computer' for both.

If I opted to go with I.E.9, would just installing the I.E.9 hidden update install well or would I have to uninstall I.E.8 first? Would these existing failed updates for I.E.8 cause any problems in the running of I.E.9?

Does that SURT scan installed on desktop need to be uninstalled (if so, how as it is not in add/remove) or just delete?
Thanks Noel.

First, try (re-)downloading the update from here - Download Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7 x64 Edition (KB2761451) from Official Microsoft Download Center and installing it from the download in a Clean Boot scenario - How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

The SURT 'Installs' only inasmuch as it uses TrustedInstaller - there is nothing to uninstall :) Keep the executable handy just in case it's needed later (but check that a new one hasn't been released first!- MS re-releases it every couple of months with updated content based on feedback from error data)

Installing Update Failures

Hi: I just can't understand why I would download & install updates for I.E.9 when I am using I.E.8 - (just uninstalled and installed I.E.8)? Do you mean those two I.E.8 failures? Just don't want to cause any extra problems - getting paranoid!

Thanks

Installing Update Failures

Hi: Well, I'm really getting tired and missing some brain cells - got my post all ready and accidentally clicked myself off and lost it all - how 'stupid' is that?

Okay, I downloaded KB2744842 from the site you provided and installed it from the Clean Boot scenario. The end result was "update is not applicable to your computer".

Both of those failed updates had the same error code numbers - 80242016 so guess that end result would apply to both of those updates?

So now can I assume that everything is okay here and just ignore the failures in the history as tho' it never happened?
Curious tho' - does Microsoft at times offer an update that is not applicable to a particular computer?
Updates seem to be working tho' as I installed about 8 of them tonight.
Thanks very much, Noel.

That error message is often associated with interference from security software - possibly even software that you've uninstalled.
What Anti-Virus is currently installed?
What other AV's have EVER been installed on this machine?
What other security software is installed?

Installing Update Failures

Avast free antivirus is currently installed on this machine. Had a trial of Avast Security for 20 days, but they reverted it back to the free version when trial had expired. But can't remember if the updates & failures or Avast install came first.

When PC was boughten, it had Norton installed on it but it was uninstalled. Also, when windows software was reinstalled the first part of Nov., norton was installed and uninstalled again.

Other security installed on this machine:
Malwarebytes Pro., Superantispyware free, Windows Defender, Windows Firewall, Spywareblaster free, Spybot (without teatimer running).
I haven't experienced any conflicts in the past with these that I am aware of.

The other day I installed the search program "Everything" and am trying to figure out how to navigate in it.
But there is about a page full of Norton entries.
Also some entries of Panthersecurity.co-uk & Microsoft panther engine (probably no significance)?
Thanks.

I Downloaded Norton removal tool, ran it & rebooted. Did the command prompt with admin. rights, added NETSH WINSOCK RESET, rebooted. Checked for updates again...."no updates available for your computer".

I checked back into 'Everything' and all that Norton stuff was still there. Guess it doesn't get removed from 'Everything' --would I have to uninstall 'everything' and reinstall it again to get a new listing of things?
Thanks

I've never heard of this program - but I suspect that perhaps Norton interfered with it in some way - uninstall/reinstall would be the cure in that case.
