Do you think if I install Vista and then update, it will get rid of this error?

It's still giving me the error. I had somebody else type in the product key, in case I was misreading something, but it's still giving me the error.

Could you post back with the complete error message?

Does the Windows 7 product key number look like the one from Option One below?

Use option 4 in the tutorial above, when you need to input product key number, Copy & Paste from the email.

I went ahead and installed Vista, and am now upgrading. I'll see if it doesn't work.

Success! Full functionality and upgrade complete. I believe the problem was with the fact that I was trying to activate through an Upgrade disk on a blank drive, as opposed to one with an existing copy of windows. Fortunately, Dells Vista disk doesn't require an Activation Key (it's just run and go).

Now, all that's left is the several hours of reinstalling drivers and what not. Thanks for your help.

Is this still open? And if so, I'd like to mention that I'm having some issues, I think they may be related, to before.

I'm on my new drive, and I'm getting an error while trying to update to W7 SP1 (it took quite some time for the updates to cycle through). The error code is 800F0900. Googling around, I found that this might indicate problems with my hard drive.


Thinking this was the case, I tried to run chkdsk from the repair disk again. It worked and managed to complete in under an hour (I took this as a good sign as running very slowly despite being smaller was a problem my old drive had), but it still fixed a few things.

Restarting, I tried to run the updater, and it failed once again. I've also tried a direct download of the SP1 installer from microsofts site, which also failed with the same error.

Remembering something you recommended before, I ran sfc /scannow and it said there were errors it could not repair.

Do you have any new advice or recommendations? The only thing I could think of that might cause an issue like this to follow to a new HD would be A) motherboard/other hardware issues B)virus/malware of some kind C)some program I install.

Overall, okay. She seems to be running okay, but now I've got a new problem, it won't install SP1. The copy of W7 I had was pre-SP1, so I had to run all the updates. It took quite a while to finish running them, and I'd installed most of my programs and files before I'd finished. Unfortunately, it is refusing to install the Service Pack update. I've tried running the program from both an ISO disk of the install and an executable file.

I'm sorry to hear that. If you like, go ahead and create a new thread about the SP1 issue along with any error messages that you get while trying to install it. Hopefully we'll be able to help with it.

As you scaned your Hd a few times for error, It would be worth Checking the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.
