A quick and hopefully simple question please:

New PC is being built with my existing Windows 7 OS being used. The plan is to put this onto a new SSD drive where it will sit in solitary splendour.

I am told that I will actually need to buy a new FULL copy of Windows 7 as my upgrade disk won't work. I explained that I have still have the Vista Home premium 32 bit (full) that came with my old PC but was told that, even using that first and then my upgrade, wont get me to 64bit; it would just give me Windows 7 32bit. I'm a little confused as, when I bought the upgrade disk, I reformatted my HDD and it upgraded to Windows 7 64bit with no problems.

Can somebody please confirm who is correct? Many thanks :)

You can not use a OEM version of Vista from your old PC, to upgrade your new PC.

Apologies for lack of clarity:

I reformatted the HDD, reinstalled Vista and then ran the Windows 7 upgrade disk

You can't upgrade a 32bits OS to an 64bits OS.
You want to do a in place upgrade from either a 32-bit version of Windows Vista to a 32-bit version of Windows 7, or a 64-bit version of Windows Vista to a 64-bit version of Windows 7. You cannot upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. You can only do a clean install from 32-bit to 64-bit, or from 64-bit to 32-bit.

But you can do a clean install with an upgrade CD! http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

So what's exactly your problem?

Why not simply clone the current win7 disk to SSD? Then you still have all your programs, settings and documents. To many files on current harddisk and it won't fit on SSD? .... Move documents and pictures and music an so on temporary to an external disk.

If you want this upgrade path... post screenshot of disk managemnt please with all fields visible. And say how large SSD is. After that I'll give you more instructions

It was a clean install with an upgrade CD I was getting at - just not clever enough to have the correct terminology. To me I went from Vista 32 to Windows 7 64 so that was me upgrading! :o The problem is that the store building the new machine said it couldn't be done and wanted to charge £100 for a new full copy of Windows 7. Hence my request for clarification.

Never go to that store again... really complete nonsense what they tell you.
Windows installer did let you do a CLEAN install becuase another win os (vista) was found.

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version pretty easy.

Why not simply clone as asked before?

Basically, because I naively assumed they would know the best way of doing it as they were professionals :zip:

I knew nothing about cloning so couldn't suggest this to them and I fear that they have now proceeded with the clean install.

They could have put the old disk in new machine. Or clone the old disk to new disk. Or make a backup from old disk to external disk, afterward restore the backup to new disk (if cloning was impossible in case both disks can't attached to 1 system the same time).

After that the new system won't boot because it's confused about a wrong sata driver. https://www.dropbox.com/home/Paragon%20Adaptive%20Restore (pdf manual included) can fix it easily and fast. Of course they have to install new drivers later from motherboard install CD or from some website (they have to do that anyway).

Or they could have done this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/135077-windows-7-installation-transfer-new-computer.html

Old disk is still available?

SO much misinformation!

If you own a full version of Vista it qualifies to use Win7 upgrade version wherever you want and is not machine-specific. You need to stop using Vista while it is serving as qualifier for Upgrade.

You also do not need Vista on the machine at all to use it as qualifier and are wasting your time reinstalling it for Upgrade. If the drive is blank then leave the Product Key blank and do the quick Registry edit afterwards in Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version to activate Upgrade version which has been installed on a blank or cleaned HD.
