Installing Win 7 on XP

I have been trying to upgrade from XP ME to Win 7, after the install has commenced, I get a message "where do you want to install Win 7?" none of the options mention my C drive, but after numerous attempts I selected every damned drive on the list and all I got was a message that "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition, See the Setup log file for more info." I cannot proceed further and I have no idea where the setup log file is (if it even exists). Now I'm stuck with a computer that won't allow me to restart or even resort to a recovery disk. Anyone out there who can suggest an approach other than nasty emails to MS?

You can't do an inplace upgrade of Windows 7 from Windows XP

I am afraid to say that your only choice is to backup your data and perform a clean install

EDIT
It appears that you may have overwritten your MBR which means that you will have to repair the XP boot files to get back in XP

With that said and done...you will still have to do an clean install to install 7

Thanks for responding to my problem; us older folks have a bit more difficulty adjusting to all this technology. I was attempting a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate upgrade. I backed up all my files on an external HD using Windows Easy Transfer. assembled all my old software in a single stack, got myself so organized I convinced myself I could do this thing (having previously reformatted hard drives 3 or 4 times.) Actually, it was a bad case of self-delusion. 30 minutes into the thing and I ran into the snag I described earlier and now I'm at a dead stop. Is there somthing I can do short of buying a new computer?
