Installing Win7 - problem communicating with a device

So here is the story.

My HDD died so I got 2 old, used ones. I made sure they are working fine. They showed no errors or bad sectors. However when I connected them to my PC, I realised I cannot install Windows 7 from my CD or bootable flash (I have installed windows before from those 2).
After I boot from the CD or Flash, windows starts loading files and suddenly:

This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

Status: 0xc00000e9

Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurrred.

What I did so far:
Made sure the HDD's are connected properly.
Tried using only 1 HDD
Disconnected my gamepad, mic, speakers etc.

Finally I dusted my old WinXP CD and guess what, it managed to install. Even now Win7 still can't install.

I've read some forum posts online and I saw some things about BIOS settings. Thing is, I'm not too fumiliar with tampering the BIOS.

Motherboard: ASUS P5LD2-X/1333
1st HDD: Maxtor 200GB 6L200S0
2nd HDD: Seagate 200GB ST3200822AS

The installation media could have gone corrupt. Try another DVD or USB stick. You can download an installation ISO from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery if yours is a retail copy.

Sounds like the hdd's are not active and need to be formatted/ cleaned
Use command prompt
During install I believe you can use recovery repair option
Or connect them with another computer

Then you need to align the SSD and define an active partition on it. You use an elevated Command Prompt with the following commands:

Diskpart
List disk
Select disk n (where n is the number that was given for your SSD in List disk)
Clean
Create partition primary align=1024
Format fs=ntfs quick
Active (assuming you want to install an OS)
Exit
