Installing windows 7 after hdd format

Ok so i was trying ubuntu on my pc and i like it just didn't want it to be my main boot loader. So i deleted ubuntu and then i kept getting the grub not found error. So then i couldn't boot into windows with out having ubuntu on my pc.

So took my hdd out and connected the sata to usb, then to my laptop to format the hard drive. And now im tryingn to install a fresh copy of windows 7, booting from the cd and it tells me my bootmgr is missing.

I also went into windows re multiple times and ran bootrec /fixmgr, /fixboot, /scanOs found 0 of course, and the /rebuild all in the command prompt. I tried the disk part also with no partitions found. I also tried gparted and made my hdd a boot and raid drive. The last thing i tried was install windows 2008 r2, which seemed like it was going to work but soon failed during the installation.

And i dont have any recovery cds or files that i made on my own. I thought installing a fresh copy of windows 7 would still work.

I have tried everything in the book that i know of. What else is there for me possibly to do. Any help will be much appreciated.

Install the drive back into your computer (guessing this is already done), boot your Windows 7 disc, pick your language, then choose repair. At the command prompt, type "bootsect /nt60 C:" (without the quotes). Restart, then try to install Windows again. Hopefully that will work.

You can also define a primary active partition on the drive and install to that. May work better.

Just boot the Win7 installer and install to the target HD plugged in alone.

All Linux code must be deleted using the CLEAN ALL command.As you have had linux on the HD you need do a Clean all & full format.

ACTIVE
FORMAT fs=NTFS

MY computer shows x:\....\.....

Why is that?

What happens if you

Just boot the Win7 installer and install to the target HD plugged in alone.

Reinstalling Windows 7

Wiping the HD may not be necessary.

if i boot from the windows 7 cd and not the windows re cd, it says bootmgr is missing


edit: just tried "bootsect /nt60 c:" it said updated to ntsc format and i thought that was working. But when i put the windows 7 cd installation disk in, i got the same old error, bootmgr is missing

That message means the disk is not booting. Have you set BIOS to boot DVD/CD first? How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD - Boot to CD

Next Try using the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key given on first boot screen to trigger the DVD to boot.

Are you getting the prompt to "Press any key to boot DVD/CD?"

Where did you get the Win7 DVD or Repair CD? Did you burn them yourself?

yes i am getting the press any key to boot the cd.

I used the windows 7 cd on plenty of computers, i cannot count how many times. The recovery cd i downloaded about 3 days ago. The recovery cd will take me into the recovery mode.

Im doing the diskpart now, im on diskpart> clean all and its been going since my last postk, which was 20mins ago, waiting on succeeded in cleaning the disk sentence.

Cleaning the disk should force the installer to autostart.

Clean all takes approx 1 hour per 320 gb.

"diskpart> clean all" is still going on. Does it suppose to take this long. A format wouldn't even take this long

That's normal.

It can take several hours if you have a 1 TB drive. As much as 5 or 6 hours if you have a 2 TB drive. It is writing zeroes to every sector of the drive.

You said you have a Win7 Installation DVD - it is not a CD which is why I ask - and factory Recovery disks, correct? Or is the Recovery disk actually a Win7 Repair CD?

If you want the cleanest reinstall boot the WIn7 DVD to clean reinstall following these steps to get a perfect reinstall: Reinstalling Windows 7.

The installer should autostart on a wiped HD, however the error you had means the disk wasn't booting and it was trying to boot the HD.

If it occurs again reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS
While in BIOS setup set the SATA controller to AHCI to try install.

Report back what happens including exact text of any error message.

Ok im on diskpart > format fs=ntfs which is going a little faster than clean all. I'm just keeping you updated and will post back later on what happens when i complete it all.

Edit: Ok so diskpart options failed also. Im goint to connect it to my bro's pc and try to install it that way. Thanks for all the help and ill let you know how that goes

ok so im still haveing the bootmgr is missing

My school let me download a copy of windows vista. I try to install it and when it gets to expanding files i got error 0x80004005. I looked that up and it said to unplug all things that dont need to be plugged in for windows to download. I did that and try to install again and now im getting error 0x80070017. I feel as soon as i look this up and fix this problem i will get another error. Can someone please help me fix my pc.

Did you try wiping the HD as I'd go ahead and do it now if formatting alone doesn't work.

How about clearing the CMOS?

Are all other HD's and peripherals unplugged?

In BIOS setup, set SATA controller to AHCI.

If you have more than 2gb of installed RAM, remove all but 2gb to try install. Next test your RAM: RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Omg I tried almost everything. I put my hd into my bro PC and try to install it and I get the same error. I even put his hdd into my PC. His hard drive tries to boot but then it goes to this blue screen for about .4 seconds and just keeps restarting.

Edit: How do I wipe the hd. If is disk part clean all, I already did that. I will also try removing the ram when I get back home. And everything else you said and I will report back later.

You can try loading up the recovery console and using the "bcdedit" command.

You'll actually need to fix your boot manager with the windows recovery disk every time you are dual booting windows/linux because the grub bootloader takes over the windows one. When you uninstall/delete the linux os, you take grub with it. leaving no boot manager.
