Installing Windows 7 (can't see HDD) (has ubuntu installed atm)

Need help badly. This netbook, has ubuntu installed. I wanted to put Windows 7 on it but I can't see the HDD during setup. BIOS detects it just fine.

I have read that Ubuntu does something to the partitions. When I do diskpart, list disk, I can only see one disk with 15GB space (Netbook has 160GB HDD). When I go into recovery in windows 7 and go command prompt it sends me directly to "X:sources" where X seems to be some kind of Windows 7 recovery image???


Please help if you have experience, need a stept by step guide or tutorial on this.

I guess the 15 GB is the disk space in which ubuntu is installed . Do you want to keep ubuntu or not ?

Download Partition Wizard Bootable CD , burn it in a disk . Boot from the PW disk , you will see the rest as unpartitioned space . Format it as NTFS primary partition (if you want to keep ubuntu, otherwise you may format the entire disk as NTFS primary using partition wizard ) .

Now you can install windows .

If Partition Wizard does see the whole Hard Disk Drive (HDD) it would be a good idea to do a wipe (secure erase) to the HDD to over-write all the Linux code so you will have the best possible space to install Windows 7 to, have a look at Option Three in this tutorial at the link below.

NO success. I Wiped the HDD (quick fill with zero's), I formated into NTFS, then I set it as active. Still no go.

Please help, it's definitely something more to it than what that guide suggests.

Where to get a SATA driver for this netbook?

Why does diskpart only see one disk with size of 15gb. No concrete answers here. Please somebody who has experience with this post in here, others wise don't waste my time and yours, ty.

Ok. Here's an answer the the What the ... question.

X: is the ram drive where the Windows PreInstallation Environment is installed. This is a mini Win 7 that has been modified for the special purpose at hand.

Now I think you said you have a netbook.

Can I assume that you have an external Cd/DVD drive that you connected via a USB port?

The next step(s) will be greatly influenced by your answer.

Wow... wrong/rude post there... We are not paid to help you, so at least you can be polite in asking for FREE help.

Anyway,

1. You only mention "netbook" in your thread, you didn't mention make/model numbers, neither specs, you didn't fill any system specs in you profile... Do you think we have 6th sense to know what kind of hardware you have?

2. The "Where to get a SATA driver for this netbook?" question, back to my first point, you didn't give any info about your machine... But I think I know the ultimate answer to this obvious questio... The system manufacturer's website sounds familiar?

#1 - X: is the drive of the WinPE image that runs Windows setup, and X:\Sources is the location of the .WIM files and tools needed to install Windows.

#2 - diskpart isn't a magical utility - it will only see disks (and disk sizes) reported to it by the driver, just like any other windows application. It can manipulate disks at a low level, yes, but it won't see something that the driver doesn't allow it to see (for any reason).

I would still reiterate what the folks above have said - do a secure wipe of the disk, and then partition it with a 3rd party utility. Make sure the boot.wim and install.wim files in your \Sources folder have had added to them any SATA or RAID drivers needed to see the disks (if it doesn't have that driver already), and you may ultimately have to ask the computer vendor what settings need to be configured for a proper Windows 7 installation on that hardware.

mercury3, I think you'll find that your current approach isn't likely to get you much further assistance. You probably want to remind yourself people assist on this forum, like many others, of their own time and goodwill. If you want either of those afforded to you by someone else here, it would be best to lose the attitude.

Fill in your system specs.

Explain the steps you have already taken, someone might see an error or give you another suggestion.

What you are trying to do is not that difficult, from your questions we can see that you need some guidence.
The members here can and will help you, if your attitude continues they will choose not to, your choice.
