Solved installing windows 7 on secondary partition

okay, so i want to dual boot ubuntu and windows 7, i already have ubuntu up and running, and i want to install windows 7 on my secondary partition.

im getting an error saying "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate existing system partition. see the setup log files for more information"

I have tried installing windows 7 on unallocated space, and ntfs, but to no avail.

(incase you're wondering partition 1 is ubuntu 10.10, 2 is where i want windows 7 ans 3 is SWAP space)

I would suggest you use the free Partition Wizard boot disk to create and format the partition you want to use for Windows 7 as a Primary partition and then use PW to mark that same partition as active, then start the install and just to be sure you have no file system errors use the Windows 7 installer to format the partition again, then finish the install.

hi great advice barefootkid but in the ubuntu forums they say have windows 7 installed first then install ubuntu with wubi

Ubuntu needs to be installed last if on same HD so it can corrupt Win7 with GRUB: http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/83923-where-install-ubuntu-my-system.html#post733626

Since you built your own PC, if you can manage another HD it is best to install the OS's on separate HD's to boot via BIOS.

This keeps GRUB from corrupting Win7 as it can do.

Just unplug the other HD during install of the other OS. Then set the preferred to boot first in BIOS setup, use the BIOS boot menu key to boot the other OS.

He already has Linux installed and he would have to start over.

Could he not imegae his Linux. I have never done a Linux image, but why not. Anybody done that before?

good advice gregrocker (i learnt the hard way) i install linux distros on there own hdd or ssd from now on. grub is ok but can mess your booting up my kubuntu runs on a 30GB ssd no problem keeping windows 7 out the way it only takes a few seconds to choose your disk to boot from.

because windows 7 is quite a valuable op system i would make it priority first save all my work from ubuntu on a large thumb drive put windows on the drive get it up and running then put ubuntu back with wubi to run alongside it and restore my work to ubuntu.

gregrocker is exactly correct. I am another that learned the hard way. I uninstalled unbutu ( or a derivative therof) and could no longer boot into windows. It installs Grub into the boot sector of windows. Grub is looking for linux, which no longer exists. Therefore you cannot boot into anything. I had to reinstall windows to get rid of it. Do yourself a favor, learn from our mistakes.

i ended up copying my entire ubuntu partition to a usb hard disk, wiping my main hdd, and installing windows on the clean disk. then i copy'd ubuntu back to the main and reinstalled grub
