Installing Windows 7

I know a little about computers, but not enough to be sure about what I'm doing.

I have Windows Vista 64bit and I've read that you don't have to do backups of your files when you install Windows 7, is that true?

I'm doing a backup right now but it's long, so who here installed Windows 7 over Vista and didn't do backups?
