I have windows vista 64 bit and am trying to install Windows7, however I get a pop up screen that says compatibility report (saved to desktop) and the computer is inactive. When I click to close the pop up it goes back to my desktop (there is an icon for the compatibility report but it is empty) I'm back at the first step of the install. Any ideas?
thanks,

Are you try to in-place Upgrade? If so, this indicates issues with installed programs. Best to boot the WIn7 DVD to do a Custom clean install: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

Make your Vista recovery disk set if you haven't already, Back up your files externally, gather your program installers, boot the Win7 DVD: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/bootcddvd.htm

The Win7 DVD will see existing OS at bootup to pass a flag allowing Upgrade version key, even if you go on to delete and format using Custom>Drive Options for cleanest possible install.

The installer is nearly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any missing drivers can then be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

Hi Rick - Since you are back to square one, try running the Upgrade Advisor before moving forward with the install. It will (hopefully) catch the compatibility issue and give you more information. It will also tell you any changes you should make to your computer in order to successfully install - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10956-windows-7-upgrade-advisor.html

Let us know what you find out!

Cheers,
Cassandra
