Hello like you guys/ women may have seen before roughly about a month ago i posted a topic which stated i got the blue screen of death when trying to install windows xp pro. I tried a series of different options such as installing from the cd and installing from a usb. I gathered the thought it was my disk even thouggh it worked fine on other systems so i managed to get hold of a another Windows XP Pro disk and just tryed to install it and the same result happened.

I put the cd rom in it goes through the first section of the installtion where it shows on the bottom of the screen what drivers it is loading etc then it says sarting windows and then crashes with a blue screen.

I have no more ideas what i can do to install this onto my laptop and any help would be highley appriciated,

Regards Paul

Paul:

There are many things it could be... SO MANY!

  • Could be bad CPU, mobo, ram, PSU, CD/DVD ROM, ...basically could be nearly any piece of hardware in the system.
  • 2nd bad CD? <-- slim chance, but still possible... but you also tried a bootable usb, right?
  • Perhaps you have a 64 bit XP and are trying to install on a PC that cannot run 64 bit...???
Ive been building and fixing PCs for nearly 20 years. If I were in your shoes, here's what I'd do:

1st thing I'd check would be the physical connections between everything...

Remove and re-insert every stick of RAM, do the same with every expansion card in the system. Always follows proper precautions to prevent ESD. (electro-static discharge... aka: static electricity).

Check every single connector from PSU, every drive data cable.

Check the fan/heatsink on cpu, the PSU as well...

Have you done any hardware changes to this system, recently? If so look to them first...

If nothing above works, try removing any add on cards. Disconnect unnecessary drives, card readers, etc... Then try the install again.

What version of XP and many have an included Service Pack... SP1, SP2, SP3. Which is yours? What bit version???

Hope something in here helps...

And even though you are trying to get help for xp on a win7 forum... we wont hold it against you!
:roflmao:

Oh... something else you could do to easily rule out many HW issues is to see if an alternate OS will install. Try one of the many free Linux distros like Ubuntu... (they're free!) If Linux loads successfully, you will know it isnt a hardware issue!

Ok heres the answers to the questions:

1) I have got windows 7 installed which i installed about 6 months ago and works fine so it will be a dual boot

2) I have installed many different operating system on my laptop in the past such as linux, ubuntu etc and i only installed this a month ago after the first installtion failed so im 99% its not a hard ware fault. I have also never disembled my aptop or changed any hard ware around etc.

3) The first cd is just xp pro alone and the second cd has sp3 within it im sure

and sorry about posting it in the wrong section but everyone here is really helpfull and bengings i have got windows 7 installed on my laptop then i thought a sneeky post would harm lol

Hope this answered your questions,

Regards Paul

Have you tried making an ISO with one of the XP disks and burning it to a USB drive so it can be installed from that?

The most common reason for the failure you describe is that the newer SATA hard drives do not have drivers in the XP installer.

Check in BIOS first to see if SATA controller can be set to IDE-emulation and this might not be necessary.

There are two ways to install the SATA controller (from the chipset, or Google it): \

Using a floppy drive (yes, XP is that old) with driver unzipped onto floppy, browse for the driver from the F6 prompt during driver-loading phase at the very beginning after installer boots.

If no floppy, then you'll need to slipstream the SATA controller driver into XP installer and recompile the ISO: How To Slipstream SATA Drivers Into XP CD

I have two computers with SATA drives and have installed Win XP on both without problems. But of course, I use IDE for the driver for the SATA controllers.

The only time I got a blue screen installing XP was when I was trying to use AHCI for the driver. XP does not know or understand AHCI.

There may be exceptions if you have specific controllers, like Nvidia, but if you are trying to install XP with the controller set to use AHCI, you will either have to slipstream those drivers in your XP install disc, as Gregrocker suggests, or use an external USB floppy drive to install those drivers using the F6 option.

Ok im going to need some help to compile a new iso with the sata drivers imported within them.

First i have already got the iso on my laptop

Second where can i find these sata drivers. My laptop is an acer 5536 and theres slightly more information about it in my system specs.

I have no idea where to get these from so any help would be highly appriciated.
