7zip will do just fine..right click on the iso and select extract here, and off ya go..

Thanks i will do that, once i do that do i have to boot it up or just go through computer then use it that way.

If you get XP installed succesfully, it will reboot and you should have a screen for you to select the Operating System, Windows 7 or XP. For more info on this you can look in the Tutorials section.
But let's try to get it to work first. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks i will do i right click the cd but i cannot extract it, there is no option from 7-zip

Is your copy of xp in an ISO format or are the files burned singly on a disc??

ISO. but when i open up the disk its not just one iso its folders and files etc.

Paul, if it is ISO, you would have only one big file named xxxxxx.iso.
Do you have for example setup.exe in the DVD? If so, you have the expanded disc. By the way, is this the original installation disc? If so it is most certainly the expanded. In that case you need to copy all contents to the hard drive partition and install from there.

ye well i thought it was the iso format but theres all different files and folders in there so it must be the expanded version and yes the setup file is in there, ill copy them all over now.

try to run setup.exe, it shoudl start the installation.

I just simply highlighted all of the files and then right click, send to x drive.

Paul, sorry for delay, it was my window for exercising.
1) Do you have hidden and system files visible? It is important you copy everything from the DVD
2) Please try to raise a command prompt in safe mode. If you hold F8 while booting, it should bring the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" , then click on "Safe Mode with Command prompt".
3) You will get a DOS like window, go to your partition (it will probably be D: ) and type setup. Then it should start XP setup. Please make sure you select the correct partition to install it, otherwise you might end up erasing your Win7

By the way, if I understood you right this is a new laptop but you have never installed XP, Win 7 was your first OS, is that right? Is that the original XP DVD that came with the laptop?

Paul, reviewing the thread I have additional questions / comments:

Well I got my laptop less than a month ago and want to put windows xp pro on there so my drivers are pretty much up to date.

If your computer is new and your XP version is older, it might mean you don't have the necessary drivers. We need to know what drivers are in the XP install. Does it have a service package in the install package (it would be mentioned on the label)

Also i dont think my disk could be corrupted becuase i only used it less than two months back on my computer and i dont really see hwo it can be corrupted.

Is this an install or repair disk that came with another computer? In that case, you are not allowed by Microsoft to install it on another computer. Moreover, if it is an OEM copy of XP, the original computer manufacturer might have implemented some booby trap to avoid the software to be installed in another computer.
In either case, we need to know where your XP install is coming from to be able to continue

The method of going into safe ode with command promt didnt work, i went to the x drive which i created for my parition, write out setup hit enetered and the window came up but yet again it did not allow me to install windows xp, the section was faded out not allowing me to click it.

Paul, is this a retail copy of the software, or a OEM copy, that is, one that came with another comnputer? If it is a OEM copy I am afraid you might not be able to install it in your laptop. If it is retail, you will need to contact Microsoft to activate it and I am not sure if they will let you activate it in another computer. You have unlimited activations in the same computer, but in another one it might be considered piracy.
