Hello everyone,

I've got a Acer Netbook Aspire One with a Atom Intel processor N570. It has 2G of Ram and I am about to put in a new 60g SSD. I would like to install windows 7 x64 to this machine (the processor is compatible with x64) and I have an OEM Windows 7 x64 disc.

I was thinking of putting in the new drive and installing win 7 from a USB drive (as this netbook has no DVD drive), but am not sure if this is possible with what I have. I can share a DD drive over my network, but without the windows OS I cannot connect to me network. I could install the on onto the drive on another computer then swap it into my netbook.

Any suggestions would be really great. Right now the netbook is running 7 Starter 32bit.
If I installed a new OS I would also need to get drivers specific for the MoBo. Not sure where I would get these.

Thanks for your help

Starter is only available in 32 bit. Before installing another version of Win7 on the netbook I would save a Win7 backup image and make any Recovery disks.

It's not certain that 64 bit Win7 will run smoothly on an Atom processor or that rig. I would first run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Thanks for the advice. So If I want to take out my old mechanical HDD and put in a new SSD (without an operating system), how could I go about getting a new OS from a Windows 7 DVD on to my Netbook if I don't have a DVD drive to boot from?

One option would be to transfer what you currently have on your HDD. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/149969-ssd-install-transfer-operating-system.html But you'd have to get an enclosure - costs appr. $20.

If you want to make a new install with your OEM CD, then you have to use a PC with a CD reader and transfer the the installation disc to a USB stick. You first copy the .iso from the CD (e.g. with ImgBurn) and then burn it to the USB stick: http://download.cnet.com/ISO-to-USB/3000-2094_4-75578611.html

Thanks. That is what I was looking for. I'll install to the SSD from a USB and then see how well the atom processor handles the x64. If it sucks then I'll clone the original drive back to the SSD and at least have a faster and more efficient drive with windows starter 32bit.

No need to clone, just save a WIn7 backup image externally, swap in SSD, boot DVD to do a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/675-system-image-recovery.html.
Again thanks for the reply, but I think you missed the fact that I DO NOT have a DVD Drive on my netbook (see first post). That is why I was asking about installing from a USB drive.

I prefer the premium Acronis imaging app which comes free with any WD or Seagate HD in the mix. The Manual is easy to understand and on the downloads page here: DiscWizard | Seagate
WD Support

So I will be getting a samsung drive which usually comes with Norton Ghost. I have EASEUS Todo backup which can create a clone. But I don't know if I can do this across a LAN. I guess I'll have to try it out.

In that case you can use Win7 backup image applied from booted Win7 installer flash stick provided in Steps 1 and 2 here.

I have never used that. So I cannot tell whether it does the job. But it comes from a reputable source. So I'd assume it works.

It's not certain that 64 bit Win7 will run smoothly on an Atom processor or that rig. I would first run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

I completed my install of Windows 7 x64 on my netbook that has an Atom processor.

It runs GREAT!
If you try it I would follow the above suggestions as not all Atom processors will be capable of running the Win 7 x64. Also some Netbooks will not allow enough RAM which will be a problem
