Insufficient System Resources Error Message

I have three systems on a gigabit network all running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. All three were upgraded from Vista Home Premium within a few weeks of each other. Two of the systems will not move/copy a 20 GB file over the home network. They give me the 0x800705AA error "Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the requested service". Both of these systems are dual core processors (E6600 and E6750). The third system has no trouble sending or receiving the 20 GB files(s) from the other two systems. The third system uses a Q9550 processor. All three systems have 4 GB of memory. Can someone please give me a hint of what is wrong with the first two systems. Did the problem get carried over from Vista? Do I need to go through the hassel of reinstalling W7 or will a system repair work? I suspect it is something in the registry concerning the network since I am not aware of any other problems. I copy/move 1+GB DVD files over the network almost daily and have never had a problem.

What is HDD free space situation on the 2 systems in question?

Are temp storage files cleaned out?

- Run the Cleaning Manager Utility -
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above under programs | select Run as Administrator | type cleanmgr tuneup in the cmd/DOS screen. Check the following boxes:

I would try xcopy with the /z parameter (xcopy /? will give you the syntax) or robocopy ( Utility Spotlight: Robocopy GUI ).

Thanks for the response, I was about to give up on the W7 forum - I originally posted this problem under the Networking topic.

All three systems have at least 100 GB free on the partition I am trying to copy to. Been there and done that (run cleanmgr tuneup) several times on all three systems. One thing that has me puzzled is the Realtek Network Driver on the system that works correctly is dated 6/25/2007 version 6.195.625.2007 and the Realtek Network Driver on the other newer system (same Motherboard) is dated 8/20/2009 version 7.6.820.2009 and the Realtek Network Driver on the third system is dated 5.25.2009 version 6.223.525.2009. The first two systems use the Gigabye EP45-UD3P (rev 1.6) MB and the third uses an older abit IP35Pro MB. I just downloaded the latest and greatest Reatek Network Driver from Gigabyte and Realtek (different version numbers!) but have not tried them yet. Could it be the Network Driver?

I have seen posts relating to this problem dating back to Windows98 where the work around was to use XCopy. I'll give it and RoboCopy a try. Does that suggest that Windows Explorer is the culprit?

The 2007 Realtek driver in a 2010 updated Windows 7 system would be a problem, IMO. I don't even like seeing the 8-20-2009 driver, either, as I usually see both Ethernet & wifi w/ 2010 timestamps on them. I had a positive and noticeable increase in network functionality and stability after I recently updated my Intel 5100 wifi drivers. But 2010 drivers are not possible for all devices, I know. Windows 7 RTM drivers are mostly July 2009, many now updated via Windows Updates and device drivers that pre-date Windows 7 RTM drivers tend to be problematic, especially NIC related.

Windows Explorer is always running. When you download a file from the Internet, it goes into temp storage folders including CONTENT.IE5 folders. The downloaded file is then copied from temp to final destination under explorer.exe.

I must tell you that I myself have never used Windows Explorer to copy large files. I use a 3rd party file manager in lieu of Windows Explorer, xcopy or copy line command. Robocopy is the said replacement for xcopy and I think it is definitely worth a try. If it or xcopy/ copy commands crashes, then the trouble is not limited to explorer.exe.

Also, when I copy/ move large/ large amounts of files around, I do so in SAFEMODE - it is faster and a/v does not fire up to scan that which I know to be free from infection.

Well it is not the Realtek Network Drivers. I updated the two EP45-UD3P systems with the latest driver version 7.11 dated 11/27/2009 from the Gigabyte web site. Nothing changed. The quad processor (Q9550) system can still copy/move/whatever the huge files with no problems and the other system with the duo E6750 processor stills gives the insufficient system resources error. I appreciate the suggested workarounds but it would seem that somebody somewhere in MSFT could explain what is different between the two systems. Either something is screwed up in the registry or W7 gives a quad processor more resources and that is why it can handle the huge files.

Boot into SAFEMODE w/ Networking and see if you can move/ copy the file there.

Yes, after several tries (my F8 finger was not fast enough!) I was able to boot into safe mode and copy huge files. So what does that tell us?

I would say the problem may be with anti-virus/ firewall.

Run msinfo32 - save as NFO file
START | type msinfo32 | save with default NFO file ext

Zip it up & attach to next post.

I included MSInfo for the Q9550 system (the one that works) and the E6750 system (the one that does not work except in safe mode). I did go and clear out the Event Logs on both systems since there was stuff logged from day one. I don't know if that made the MSInfo files any smaller but it seemed like a good idea. Then I tried to do the 20GB copy from the E6750 system to the Q9550 system (the one that had always failed) just to verify that clearing all the event logs had no effect and guess what - it worked!! So what does that tell you?! Is there a super utility that will do a clear all events before I try to move huge files?

I restore my system disk so that it was back in the state where it would not do the copy/move of the 20 GB file and ran the BAT to clear all events. It seemed to work and as expected. After it completed I could copy/move the 20 GB file. So I am pretty sure it has something to do with how much stuff Windows has accumulated in the event logs. I included a "revised" MSInfo32 file since I'm not sure if the last one was correct after what Cleanmgr with everything selected for deletion did to my system!

There was NO Error reporting information in either msinfo32 file (WERCON), probably because of the batch script that you ran!

If there are events (errors..?) being recoded by the Event Viewer at some horrific rate during a file transfer that requires the removal of such events before each large file transfer, that in itself is a problem.

These items are found in "bad guy" that are not found in "good guy" - loaded module listing -

You do have Norton Internet Security on both systems. Knowing that NIS phones-home every 15 minutes or less + the other event log entries it generates, it may be an issue on the one system. You may just be lucky on the 2nd system w/ NIS.

The Event Viewer does record events in SAFEMODE just as it does in normal Windows.

You are correct. The "bad guy" system had several pages of W7 crashes that I had caused when I was in the process of overclocking the system. Apparently clearing them out (I did it maually before discovering the script!) makes the problem go away. I will let the event logs alone for a few weeks and then try the huge file copy again to make sure it is still working - if not I'll supply you with a "good" MSInfo32 file and maybe get to the root cause.
