Try Windows 8 with VIStart!

And this has WHAT to do with the original problem??

I use ViStart on an XP box -- and it gives me a desktop look and feel similar to Win7 -- and has NOTHING to do with screen resolution and/or getting Aero to work.

It's a suggestion.

Why spending hours on a issue that is possibly not present in Win8. Easy to try.

Gee, that is one old chipset :). First Intel graphics that get the native Windows 7 Driver (WDDM) is the GMA 950 Series, such as i945.

Well basically, depending on HOW you define "not present in Win8" -- that could be correct.

I tried testing a system with a 915GM chipset -- a newer version than the one discussed in this thread -- and, while the screen does display, it does NOT support the features present in Win7. Why? Because, for all Intel chipsets prior to the 945, the Win7 Intel driver is an XPDM driver, meaning, it's an XP-era driver and, unfortunately, MS removed XPDM support entirely from Win8.

Which means, like I was, the OP will be provided a GENERIC VGA driver for Win8, and will NOT have a choice about any others.

I got 1280 screen res in Win7 with my 915GM driver; in Win8, I only got 1024 -- with NO options to increase it.

My point about commenting on ViStart is that, from what I read, the OP's concern was with getting higher screen resolution, which from what I've seen, is not improved in any way by installing ViStart.

Install on CF-29 Mk4 with 915GMS chip

Hi All,
I found the installation procedure will fail if you have a Toughbook with a 915 GMS Intel graphics controller.
I have a C_29LAQGZBM which makes it a Mk4 model. I'm not sure but the Mk5 might also have the 915 controller chip.

I was able to get the procedure to work if I used Intel's WIN2K_XP142550 driver. I got it here.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...wnloadType=Drivers&OSFullname=Windows+2000++*

After installing the Windows performance rating went from 1 to 1.9, still not a screamingly fast video, but now at least Solitaire is playable :-)

I have noticed one side effect however, desk top background is now off centred and the task bar notification area cant be seen if the task bar is at the bottom. If you move the taskbar to the left the system tray notification area becomes visible again.

I have only been running it this way for a day, so more hiccups might show up.

Mike

I tried some other drivers and found that version 6.14.10.4308 installed in compatibility mode win2000 works to.
The other one had some funny side effects like generating a desktop larger than the display can handle.
After installing this one, I didn't mess with trying to increase the rez above 1024x768 in case the desktop size got stuck like it did with the win_xp142550 driver.
I recommend using v 6.14.10.4309 now. I got it from the cnet link

update for old laptop users

Believe or not, I was able to apply the procedure to a very old Packard Bell p4/3Ghz lap!
The only glitch was to make unusable both vgapnp.sys in the drivers dir and in the driverstore...display... dir
The win2000 dir can be piked while the installation (broken due to compatibility issue) is still open in the user\local\...
Thanks a lot to everybody! dir

Saved my A$$

The US Navy is mandating that we move from XP to Win7 (specifically, I'm using WES7). The XPE driver that I was using was custom built (using the IEGD tool) to use both the VGA and LVDS ports. I used my existing XPE driver with this technique and it worked for me.

You TOTALLY saved my skin.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

You deserve the bonus that I'll likely get for saving our program from having to add an extra secondary video board.

It is nice to hear that after all these years, the guide is still useful :)

I would not mind a small bonus though, haha.

I am glad to help.

First command you do is:

takeown /f c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys

This will give ownship to the current user. You should see a message saying SUCCESS etc..

I typed in the first command and received Error Invalid argument option 'fc:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys'. Type 'TAKEOWN/? for usage. no luck for me on this Gateway 7330GZ laptop

OK thanks, I will try again and add a space between the f and the c. hopefully that will do it. Is there a space after 'takeown', because it looks like there is? I'll let you know.

Are there any spaces in the second command line?

I have a similar issue as another poster above that was never responded to.

I complete all the steps successfully but when I reboot the PC the display adaptor reverts back to an unknown device. is there any trick to get it to get it to stick?
