As advised in another thread I have downloaded and installed the Intel Chipset Drivers Update but the nothing happened to the unknown device I see in Device Manager. The installation completes instantly and I see that this indicates the drivers in the update are not needed by my system.

I am running Widows 7 Professional and the motherboard details show Intel 915P and Intel ICHR6 chipsets. The unknown device appears under Other Devices and in the Properties the Hardware IDs are listed as:

ACPI\WEC0513
*WEC0513

I would be grateful if anyone can point me to drivers for this device. However to be completely upfront I am not aware of the existence of a device in my system that is not working or available to me. So I could live with the situation!

After some searching, it turns out that the ACPI\WEC0513\* HWID corresponds with a device called "Winbond Smartcard Reader". Smartcards also are not included in the official DriverPacks... But I strongly doubt you would need it, smartcards are only used for authentication in large companies. If you don't need it for authentication, then you certainly can live without it. Just right-click that device and disable it.
This would appear it may be the device.
I would do as they pointed out right click the device in Device Manager and delete.

The hardware wizard may detect and install it properly after that. If not as you stated you can live without it "a smart card".

I would also stay away from third party driver providers as Parabellum has posted. You never know what kind of critters and bugs you will get in your downloads.

Infected drivers? I doubt that is very likely. And the link is originally taken from a reputable company anyway.

MS, Intel, Gigabyte, Asus, AMD, Nvidia reputable.

Sites like you posted mostly want money for you to run their FREE scans so they can sell you junk progams or give you problems.

Go where you wish Parabellum.

I would stay away from them.

Yes I looked

You nor anyone else knows what is in the downloads at a site like that.

I won't recommend any third party driver sites.

First and foremost use Microsoft Update Catalog. First. Every time.

I don't trust any 3rd-party driver aggregator sites, either. Nobody knows Windows as well as Microsoft. Period. Anyone that tells you different is lying.

Solution (possibly) Future proof » Tim’s free-for-all driver guide Looks like a media card reader. Search for the model there (ACPI\WEC0513).

Thank you Parabellum and the other contributors to this thread. I have followed the several pointers (and noted the advice!) you have given me but, as yet, the device remains unknown.

As I said in my OP I am willing to live with the situation as the card reader works and seems unaffected by the lack of a driver.
