Intel confirms USB bug in 'Haswell' chipset

The chipmaker says a USB bug in the chipset that accompanies the "Haswell" processor exists and will be fixed.

Intel confirmed a USB bug in its next-generation "Haswell" chipset.

The bug can cause USB (Universal Serial Bus) 3.0 devices, like thumb drives, to disappear after entering standby. In some cases, removable devices have to be reconnected again, according to a report at BSN.

The company issued the following statement this afternoon. The bug, in Intel parlance, is referred to as an "errata." The chipset is silicon that accompanies the main Haswell processor:

Hehe..... now I can RAZZ my brother! He works for Intel you see, management at that. Nothing to do with the design or manufacture, training I think it is but hes been bragging about the trip to China he just got back from a couple of weeks ago. Next time I go out to Arizona I'm gonna shove my usb3 external at him and mourn.

I seem to remember reading about this months ago. iirc what happens is that Haswell basically shuts DOWN when idle, which causes difficulties when you have files open on an USB drive. I don't know how Intel plans to fix this, because to my understanding it's a fundamental flaw in the implementation.
