So basically I would need an intel motherboard to support i5? And if I was to buy to a new motherboard what would be a good one for my radeon 6850 and 8GB dd3 ram?

Yes, I would recommend a Z77 board, you have a good GPU and ram and Z77 board will support it.

I agree with Dude. A Z77 board would work great. Asus and MSI make some really nice ones and you can find one on any budget.

The "any budget" bit might drive things to a B75 board at the low end. I'm not sure what that would lose compared to a fully blown Z77 board.
