It's probably not worth the upgrade from a performance standpoint for most users, but I'll upgrade simply for the lower power consumption. If the rumors were right, the chip should launch today, however after looking at the above link, those interested may have to wait another week.

If you're sitting on a Sandy, say 2500k and up, it's not going to be worth the money for the upgrade. The biggest performance gains will be seen on the onboard video. All other increases are nominal from all reports and testing that I have seen. So, save your money folks.

Coming from a Pentium, I don't think I'll need to overclock.

Too bad that the first i5 with HD 4000 has an unlocked multiplier, as that will be a waste. I may end up choosing a different processor (such as an i7 or holding off until the later i5), or maybe I'll get this and eventually get a better cooling system so I CAN overclock it.

You would be upgrading from a Core i7-2600 to an Ivy Bridge simply for the lower power consumption? How much do you figure you can save over the course or a year?

According to this chart (Power Consumption And Efficiency : Intel Core i7-3770K Review: A Small Step Up For Ivy Bridge), the Ivy Bridge averages about 6 watts less than a Core i7-2700K

According to this writeup (Intel Ivy Bridge review) the power difference is less than 3 watts.

And finally, one more chart showing as much as 11% difference between the Ivy Bridge i7-3770K versus an i7-2600k under load. But that amounts to only 147 watts instead of 166. That's only 19 total watts.

So, at my house, where my elec runs around $0.12 per killowatt hour, 19 watts/1000 = 0.019 killowatts. Multiple 0.019 kilowatts by $0.12 per hour = $0.00228 per hour x 24 hours in a day = $0.05. So, at 5 cents per day, this would save $1.50 a month if you box was running 24x7 and under load the entire time.
