Intel or AMD

Intel for power, AMD for cost.

I typically go with whichever processor provides the best bang for the buck at the time. My laptop is an Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor as it takes the least power and provides the best battery life. My desktop is an Intel 9550 quad core. My primary Linux desktop box is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and my server box is an AMD Sempron 64 2800+. So, as you can see, I'm spread quite evenly.

Wire management on my Antec 900 is somewhat difficult, but luckly, I have a modular power supply

I have both Intel and AMD - but no preference. The AMDs seem to be faster (on an apples to apples comparison with my laptops). But that is just an impression, no scientific statement.
For vanilla applications I prefer my AMD 4800+ over my Intel Q6600 quadcore. But for e.g. video editing or filetype conversion, the quadcore has the edge. Both are desktops.

No, I did not cut any holes in my motherboard tray. Here is what the backside of the mobo tray looks like with the side off the computer

And I cannot speak highly enough of how well these dust filters work in my Antec P182 case. I popped open the case tonight to take the pictures above and was astounded by how clean everything was inside of the case still. Check out my CPU fan and my rear 120mm case fan after 9 months of use. And I assure you...I have not cleaned the actual fans 1 single time. And this computer sits downstairs in a basement about 5 inches of a carpeted floor.

Here are the dust filters in the front. They are behind two smaller door and 1 larger door. The computer pulls air in from the sides of the front door and over these filters. You can see some of the dust buildup on the lower filter.

That's excellent! The HAF932's lacking spot is no dust filters. I have to blow my case out every other week.

I should have you wire my next build. Only this time I'm going to try and keep the excitement to a minimum and take the to find a newer case one of the ones with the cut outs for changing the CPU cooler and the cut outs covered with rubber for cable management.
Now as far as AMD, Intel. I learned to overclock on my AMD 4000 939 DFI SLI Expert board, with Mushkin DDR 500 4 gigs and Loved that system. My new system I like but I still miss my AMD would like to see how it would have preformed with the new graphics cards and Windows Seven. Even though at the time i was running 2 Evga 7900 GTO's in SLI.
I think the choice boils down to bang for buck, chipset and video card preferences. JMO. Fabe

I think Intel if you want the absoulte best performance, but have to pay alot(those i7's 980X) but, AMD is great cost with amazing over-clock-ablity(much easier then in intel i think) And as always, im always with AMD graphics, bah nvidia and those 480's... 5970 alll the wayyyyy!

If you can afford best cooling system then go with AMD.

Yeah, good point. I've seen quite a a number of people suggest going with a lower cost AMD, then overclocking it to perform as good as a higher end Intel chip..but then they have to spend extra money for the thermal paste and high end coolers and everything else to keep the system running stable. Sometimes the extra cost of the cooler make the AMD option the more expensive one. Again, I'm not an Intel fanboy, I'll use whichever chip gives me the best performance....this was simply just an observation.

For me I've used both AMD and Intel. This is my first Intel CPU in like 4 years. I am not an Intel or AMD fanboy. I had the 955BE for about 3 months and sold it to a friend and bought myself the i5 750. Both are good but I wanted to try Intel this time around. Glad I did. For cost I'd say AMD they make good CPU's for gaming. Intel for lower temps and if you put on a decent cooler you can overclock them easily. Intel just seems to ahead of AMD in the CPU realm at the moment. Right now the i7 980x is the best money can buy according to some of the reviews I've read.

Either way you go you should be happy with your choice. Good luck and get back to us with specs of your new rig.

lol, it's it's only real Achilles heel. I'm overdue for a clean - way over due.

I removed my ghetto filters due to summer, but now that it's cooling down again - it's time to put them back.

Same goes with the Antec 900....after 1 week of completing my system, there were already dust on the front hdd cages -_-
