Intel Pentium 2.4 vs Intel i5 1.8

So I was wonder since Intel Pentium is a bit older that the new i5's does the 2.4 vs the 1.8 make a big difference? I know the i5 would just have better architecture and more features but in terms of performance which one of the 2 takes the cake?

More cores, cache and threading are always better. You didn't state which type or model you're comparing.

Also keep in mind that the CPU is not the only factor that matters in the equation.

The P4 is installed in a socket that goes with a chipset that goes in a motherboard whose components and performance are limited by that platform. The entire system is not going to perform as well as the newer platform that the i series processors run on. So it is not just a matter of comparing the raw specs of on CPU against the other IMHO.

Can't recall the models but both have 500gb HDD and 8 GB ram

That's not the point. The i5 will be the better deal in all cases.

There is a lot more to CPU performance than just clock rate. The maximum clock rate of CPUs hasn't changed much in the last 10 years but the performance is much better. And it isn't just due to the number of cores.

I agree with all the statements. The OP was trying to compare CPUs now it sounds like he's trying to compare PC systems of which there are thousands of combinations. I'll let you guys duke-out which chip set, motherboard, memory, disk drive and video is best.

The complete story sure would help. The i5 speed must be for a laptop but who knows?

I own 1 laptop with an i5 and that performs very well. Today I would never buy one of those antique P4s.
