I don't think there needs to be as many choices. Do we really need all the various processors that we have now? Take a look in the Intel Ark to see how many revisions and steppings there are. What I see happening is Intel creating a low, mid, and high end proc, and then pairing it with one or two chipsets. For example, an H61 and a P67. That gives a potential of six choices, and that could be trimmed to 5 by eliminating the high end chip on the lower chipset. Now each manufacturer can take those proc and chipset combo, and do with them as they see fit...maybe add extra features, like SLI, onboard wireless, etc. You could still do mini, micro, or full ATX, with various feature differences between them with respect to the size of the PCB.If my thoughts are true the choices would be very limited.
When you lay it all out, this decision wouldn't be very limiting at all.
