Intel previews SSD overclocking

Overclocking of processors and graphics cards has been a staple of the PC enthusiast community for years, but it looks like a new component will soon be available for the tweaking set.

Intel, which offers CPUs with unlocked multipliers (the "K" series) to ease the overclocking process, is now apparently working on letting users overclock their solid-state drives. The company just previewed the overclocking potential of its SSDs at the PAX Prime festival, with more info supposedly coming at the upcoming Intel Developer Forum next week.

Yeah, close to that, if not quite.

Caching to available RAM can make for some much faster speeds though, but that's neither here nor there (other than I have heard of RAM overclocking).

So that being said, overclocking the SSD while being limited by SATA, seems kind of like a gimmick to me. But I guess if you get a new lower performing SSD and want to push it marginally faster at the risk of reduced life potential, this could be an option.

To me over clocking a quality SSD is for bragging rights. With Sata II and Sata III as options what is the point. Using a SSD instead of a hard drive removes the bottle neck we use to have; again what is the point to over clock a SSD.
I personally don't use SSD speed to choose which one to by. I look very carefully (as best I know how) at reliability. Then I check with my local Intel Dealer and get his input on products he does or does not have problems with.
He builds bunches of computer for government, business, and personnel use
and offers a parts and labor warranty. Their for he is also looking for quality. Come backs don't make him or his customers happy.

Instead of overclocking, I'd be really impressed if they can make SSD's 4K QD=1 read speeds reach 500 MB/s. Maybe in 5 years or less this could be accomplished with PCI-E port.

I don't know...

Not exactly sure how it translates, but I get about that on my NTFS formatted RAM drive (with raw RAM speed being 37GB/s).

Why doesn't Intel just overclock the SSD from factory and sell it to consumers for a little premium over non-overclocked ones but still retain full warranty for the overclocked SSD's just like videocards.

Then at least factory overclocks will still be within the stable operating speeds of the SSD for piece of mind reliable data storage and OS installations.

Other than this I see no reason to overclock SSD's even for bragging rights, we're talking data corruption and data lost here not just a BSOD's like in the case of overclocking CPU's and videocards.

I have seen many of those lately there Mineral Oil set ups

There was one that had Baby Oil :shock: I am not sure how that works but it looks pretty darn cool

Baby oil is usually just mineral oil with some lanolin and fragrance added.
