Intel returns to its roots with slew of overclocker-friendly desktop CPUs

For the last few years, Intel has focused primarily on its mobile CPUs—its chips for laptops, Ultrabooks, tablets, and phones have generated more attention than their high-end desktop lineup. But yesterday Intel threw a bone to the desktop-building, CPU-overclocking desktop set in the form of a few new high-end chips that will go on sale later this year.

Oh goodie, more money to throw away as I build a new X99 system and dump my less than year old Haswell system as old tech.

After that, I'll throw another 700+ bones at a video card, cause my old one wont be up to task of handling the massively improved X99 system and all it's goodness. After that... I'll benchmark all day as I post about how wonderful my new powerful system is

All that so you can run Windows 9 as fast as you ran Windows 98. One a system probably a 1000 times as powerful. Sometimes I think we are approaching the "law of diminishing returns".

Damn I just built this computer and it will obsolete before it needs a good cleaning.
It's nice to see Intel stepping up to the plate once again. Now if they would do that with motherboards it would be interesting.
If they would make motherboard that could be clocked like a Asus ect with their new cpu; now the motherboard wars would start.
I have never had a Intel motherboard ever give me a problem but they just worn't made for over clocking. Even their DX58SO was no barn stormer. Come on Intel I know you can do it.

Actually I LIKE the whole idea of these mini desktops - I've already ordered TWO and probably will get a 3rd. My reason for replacing was - low power consumption, far less cables, NO NOISE !!! and tiny footprints. - I'm giving my old tower PC's away --although they still work they ARE OLD !!.

I understand that it's no point if you've recently bought a new PC but if your stuff is really old it is sometimes a better idea to replace --maintaining old equipment can often become expensive in certain cases.

Power consumption will become an increasingly important factor too-- I'm lucky (Iceland has loads of cheap geothermal energy) - but some of my colleagues in UK and Belgium have seen Gas and Electricity prices rise by up to 300% over the last few years --and this trend will continue - without getting political - crises in places like UKRAINE / RUSSIA and Middle east (Libya, Quatar etc) aren't helpful if countries become dependent on these areas for their Energy

That said if the gear does what you want acceptably then keep it.

A new form factor has been long overdue.
An expansion slot not covered by the video card would be nice.
(OK, it's more like a video box!)
