Intel unveils Devil’s Canyon, its first 4GHz CPU, plus a 20th-anniversary Pentium processor

Intel’s fifth-generation Core processor family—code-named Broadwell—might be late, but the company has cooked up a couple of brand-new Haswell-class desktop CPUs that PC enthusiasts are sure to dig. Code-named Devil’s Canyon, Intel unveiled the all-new Core i7-4790K and Core i5-4690K processors at Computex on Tuesday (Taiwan time). Intel is also marking the 20th anniversary of its Pentium processor by introducing the all-new Pentium G3258.

The Core i7-4790K is notable for its ability to run all four of its cores at a base clock frequency of 4.0GHz. Other Intel CPUs have been able to reach this frequency on one or several cores for brief periods (a burst mode Intel identifies as “Turbo Frequency”), but this new part will run that fast consistently and boast a turbo frequency up to 4.4GHz.

I've just been reading up on the 4790 after getting the itch to upgrade my 4670k, and from what I can see the gains I'd get are negligible. Great chips for new builds or upgrades from older architecture, but from a Haswell (even Ivy Bridge) point of view it's probably just not worth it.

Unfortunately although it's fast out of the box it doesn't look like it overclocks much better than anything they have released before. OC headroom and all that.

The new thermal solution Graff spoke of is known by its very long acronym: NGPTIM (Next-Generation Polymer Thermal Interface Material). It’s essentially grease that the factory applies to the heat spreader housing the processo

From what reviews I have seen on the engineering samples, the 4790k runs 6c cooler than the 4770k, but the 4790k may require more volts which may negate that.

Delidding has been giving 4770k owners around a 20c drop.

I think the jury is still out on this.

Delidding seems have to be done in a proper way and put IHS back to gain temps looks not that easier, in particular with Air Cooler when its time to tight it on the CPU.

Hell is electrical tape, roller paper, nail polish, tricks with spacers...wrecked CPU! I can see myself Hammer & Vice!! But i can also see myself in a near future with Haswell i5 or i7 refresh!

Doesn't seem that hard to delid. The problem with the original haswell was not only the TIM, but the gap between the die and IHS was too large. Delidders cleaned off the IHS glue for a smaller gap and got much better results.

Just saying, from news so far, there may still be as much delidding on DC as original Haswell by enthusiasts.

Several teams competed live on stage for cash prizes.

Intel provided the CPUs but it's unclear whether these were engineering samples or from a production run.

Stable 4 core 8 thread clocks ranged from 5.2 GHz to 5.5 GHz with closed-loop water cooling (custom loops weren't allowed). The top OC using LN2 was 6.3 GHz.

It remains to be seen if the CPUs that the average consumer gets will be able to OC to these levels. I'm definitely interested and I'll be watching the reviews in the weeks following the general release.

Every site that I've seen so far that mentions the Challenge points to a singe website that is a bit difficult to navigate.

Those were cherry picked.

There has been a number of reviews on the engineering sample processors ([H]ard forms, vortez, legit reviews to name a few). The results aren't very impressive.

You follow Computex too? I thought I was the only one here watching footage of it on YouTube. I guess I was wrong. Is the 4790 a Devil's Canyon chip? Since 4790k and 4790 should be the same thing assuming this is just like 4770 and 4770k, I think 4790 which is not unlocked is technically an early released Devil's Canyon CPU.

The 4790 and 4790k are different and not like the 4770 and 4770k. The 4790 is not Devils Canyon.

The 4790k is a 4790 with improved Thermal interface material (thermal paste) between the die and the integrated heat spreader, more capacitors on the power input to help improve the overclockability, components of the on-board voltage regulator more spread out on the die to better dissipate their heat, and the chips binned (selected) to achieve a much higher base and turbo boost frequency - 4GHz and 4.4 GHz turbo, than predecessors.

DC 4790K and 4690K are a special one off K processor run. It is what 4770k and 4670k (and the non-k versions) should have been in the first place.

they are the same, Intel is using "Devils Canyon" as a big marketing ploy to attract the uninformed. Devils Canyon's only difference is the new thermal interface crap, still not solder like Sandy Bridge is.

They are not the same (for one thing one is unlocked ). However the die is basically the same as the 4770. The changes they made and binning will give you a better guaranteed clock and it will run slightly cooler, but it will more than likely not overclock any better than a 4770k.

It is not an upgrade to any Haswell based processor and not a reason to all of a sudden want to upgrade from a SB or IB processor. However if you are going to upgrade to Haswell, it is the processor you would want to upgrade to, even if you don't overclock.

Unfortunately Intel put their hype engine into overdrive towards computex making claims of 5 GHz on air that just cannot be. Before that the expectation was that DC would be a modest improvement in TIM and clock, which is what it is turning out to be to some level.
