A lot of corporatespeak gobblydegook from Intel and MS is out there, so I need some plain words about Spectre and Meltdown:

My machine is a Win 7 Ultimate 64 w Intel Pentium G620,
MS Security Essentials A-V w Windows Firewall
I've had it only a year and I can't afford a new one.

1--I ran Gibson's Inspectre.exe, and found my CPU is vulnerable, but not my browser
2--Can I get a patch? If so, where?
3--If I don't patch, what might happen? then I'll decide what to do
4--I just installed KB4074587. Is that the only Feb update? Is it cumulative? Dec never installed, Jan wouldn't install, but finally did when the Feb one came out. My mind is spinning.

We don't have the same issues. sevenforums has a policy of not posting my own problems in someone else's thread:
Windows Update Posting Instructions - Windows 7 Help Forums

KB4074587 installed last night, Win wouldn't start today, had to do a sys restore.

I'll get back to this when all my logs are ready.

Hi Rowin7,

to answer your questions
Its NOT just Intel and MS

Patches are being released >>piecemeal<< by
OEM's/Intel/AMD/MS/Browser providers
For Bios,CPU,GPU and browsers

In my post that Townsbrg linked it gives a basic heads-up

As ALL the patch updates have NOT been issued there is still a small risk

Re your updates failures - MS issued and pulled the Jan Cumulative as it borked AMD users, but it also required your AV to have been updated to include a special registry key

Yes, all corporations like to speak a lot of B-S disguised in corporatese. The fact that the other link is an overview doesn't help me in understanding it.

My AV is in my signature, MS Security Essentials, and it's always up-to-date. I have the required reg key. But the Dec didn't install at all, the Jan installed only after the Feb came out, and the Feb borked the startup. If this is MS's fault, and not a problem in my computer, I'll wait. I thought it was something in my machine.

My browser is not vulnerable; I checked inspectre.exe

So in my case, that leaves MS, Intel, and GPU. I'm not concerned about components I don't have or use.

If you think I shouldn't be ticked off about MS's racket: they publish faulty OS's before they're perfected, then they send years of updates, but the updates often don't install, then they fix or pull the updates, fix them and send them out again. After a few years, they stop updating, publish a new OS, then start the cycle again. We've been been living with this for 25 years.

It's true no one knew about Spectre/meltdown when Win 7, 8 and 10 were published, but MS's way of doing business would have put companies in any other field out of the ball game.
