Interface freezes, cannot click, but programs still running (new SSD)

Hi,

I've recently installed a Kingston SSD and did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. It runs well most of the time, but once or twice a day, usually when browsing the internet using Chrome or Firefox, the mouse pointer will go to the "busy" circle, and the program will stop responding. When it does this, I can't click on any other programs on the taskbar or use ALT-TAB to switch to another program.

The mouse moves, but I can't interact with anything. If I'm playing music with Spotify in the background, or video chatting on Skype, they still run in the background, the skype video for the recipient doesn't even freeze.

So it seems that all the programs are running, but my user interface stops working properly.

Any ideas? Thanks!

What antivirus software are you running? I experienced this quite a bit with my antivirus software a few months ago.

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
  1. Click Start Menu
  2. Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
  3. Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
  4. Expand Custom Views
  5. Click Administrative Events
  6. Right click Administrative Events
  7. Save all Events in Custom View As...
  8. Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
  9. When asked, save the display information in English.
  10. Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
  11. Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
  12. Upload the .zip file here.

I've attached the errors as you suggested.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials

MSE does not cause any freezing issues, so it is likely something else. Checking your logs...

You have a lot of these errors:
Code:
.NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v4.0.30319_32) - 1>Failed to compile: System, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089 . Error code = 0x80131f06

Try uninstalling .NET Framework 4.0 and re-installing and seeing if it resolves the freezes.

You also have this error, which can be common with MSE, but may suggest that you should uninstall it and re-install it again.
Code:
The description for Event ID 3002 from source Microsoft Antimalware cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

%%835

I've done both those things, uninstalling and reinstalling both .NET 4.0 and MSE, and I'm still getting crashes.

Here's the Event viewer files (taken today)

In fact, I got a crash right there just before exporting the Event Viewer readings. I was running Firefox at the time, with Chrome and Thunderbird running in the background.

Code:
The description for Event ID 9 from source iaStor cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

Are your SSD controllers and SSD firmware updated?

Also, when you save the event viewer logs, save the display information when asked in English.

I've checked using both the built in driver checker in Device Manager and by checking the version available on the Lenovo drivers page, and I'm running version 8.9.2.1002 which it claims is the most up to date version.

I've tried to install other drivers from the Intel RST page, but it keeps saying I do not meet the minimum system requirements.

I then downloaded and burnt to CD the iso file on the Lenovo website called "Solid State Drive Firmware Update Utility", which confirmed that no firmware update for AHCI was needed.

I also confirmed in the BIOS that AHCI is indeed enabled.

I think these freezes are pretty much definitely due to the disk, as during them CPU usage drops to around 2-4% while disk usage is at 100%.

It may be software that is causing it. The display information was not saved when you saved the logs (my fault for not asking sooner). See my previous post as it has been edited and updated to ask for that information. You could also Google the information if you want to by going into the event viewer custom views administrative logs and looking for Event ID 9 and seeing what program is causing the error.

Odd, it still seems to be missing the display information. Can you double click on the Event ID 9 (see the fourth column of the logs) and post the message you are receiving?

Souce (third column) should be iaStor

Thanks, I've applied the registry fix they suggested and we'll see if it helps!

I'll post if I get another freeze, and if not, I'll post back in a few days to say so :)

I've had a similar issue, but I'm not able to view the information on the link you posted writhziden. Based on the fact that schadenfreude did not respond, I'm assuming what ever was on that page fixed his issue. Any chance you could post the information located there?

I have a similar problem (although I have no SSD). I very frequently experience that the entire interface "hangs", I cannot click anything (icons on desktop, quick start button, maximize and minimize windows, taskbar icons etc.). A particular program might respond, like Internet Explorer where I am able to browse and click, but e.g. Chrome is totally strange: if I click a bookmark it automatically opens in a new tab and not the same tab, and if I click on a tab it closes instead of switching to it. Strangely enough if I activate task manager then everything resets and works fine, if only for a brief moment.
