Hi,

Hope fully someone can help me, I have a system with the following specs

Coolermaster M1000 Silent Pro 1,000w
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
Intel Core i7 920
3 x 2gb OCZ Gold DDR3
MSI NVidia GeForce GTX580 Lightning
Intel X25-M 80gb SSD (for os)
2 x 500gb WD Barricudas RAID0
Creative X-FI Fatality Sound Card
Windows 7 x64 Pro (retail)

The components aren't very old maybe 18m for the processor, mem and board, psu and gpu are less than a year.

Everything has been running fine until recently when I noticed that when I updated my GPU driver some of the components failed to install and when I rebooted I got the BSOD.

I system restored back to a previous version 280.26 and it booted okay, so I went into safe mode done a driver sweeper and tried to reinstall 285.27 again.. same problem.

I done the same proceedure and tried to get a different version of the driver in 280.36 and im getting the same issue again so I'm thinking a possible hardware failure.

One other point I'd like to share is a few days ago my machine just turned itself off for no apparent reason and when I restarted it I could smell burning. I dont know whether that is related but thought you should know.

Hope someone can help.

Dumps etc are attached.

Thanks for your help.

Hi F1aw1ess :)

(If your overclocking anything please set it back to factory settings)

That smell burning is not good.

First thing to do is to open the case and check all the hardware.

You may have a gpu fan burn.

Clean everything inside the case with air spray or blower.

Start the pc and check if all the fans work\spin.

If so far so good.

Then use the driver sweeper backup\restore and restore nvidia.

Then run this test http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/160729-nvidia-video-card-test-occt.html and post here the results.

Thanks for the reply,

I have reset my overclock as suggested and checked all fans spin which they do.

Give it a clean although it was pretty clean anyway.

I've disconnected my 2 WD HD's which were in RAID0 and removed my second GPU so I've only got the 580 attached.

I'm still having intermittent issues, sometimes it gets stuck on the welcome screen, other times it fails with the same BSOD, others it goes to welcome then I get a black screen and have to restart.

I managed to get into it this morning and run the OCCT test for 1 hour as suggested and attached the results herewith.

I'm thinking a possible power supply problem, does the attached .png's look like they should?

Thanks again for your help.

EDIT: I've just put the GeForce GT210 back in to attach my other 2 monitors and I immediately get the BSOD. I turned off and removed it and it loads into windows fine. But if I remove the GTX580 and put the GT210 in on its own its also okay, maybe the bottom PCI-E port is broken?

The test results shows errors.

Try just the one gpu in all slots.

Then try the other gpu again in all slots.

Did you ever updated the bios and how? (dont update it just reply my answer)

Hi,

Errors on the PSU current or on the GPU?

To update, yesterday I wiped the OS on the SSD and broke the RAID0 array and formatted the two normal hard drives.

I reinstalled Windows 7 and put the 580 in slot 2 and the 210 in slot 4 with driver 275.33 and it all works perfectly.

Had a gaming session last night of a couple of hours without issue, I'm wondering whether my system just doesnt like the new 285.27 driver although I have never ever had any issues with NVidia drivers and install every single new Beta released.

I did order a new PSU (Corsair HX 1050w) which arrived this morning but I'm reluctant to take it out the box as my system is working fine now and its £160's worth.

In regards to the BIOS, I'm assuming you mean the motherboard BIOS? If so yes I am on the latest BIOS revision, F6 I think but that was way before the problems started. I used Gigabyte @BIOS program to update.

I've been keeping an eye on the Event Viewer since reinstalling and apart from a faulting application (iexplorer.exe) every so often which maybe related to a different AV I have installed, everything looks good.

What would you suggest I should do from here as I dont really want to be faced with a similar issue in a few months times when potentially my PSU & GPU could be out of warranty?

Thanks again for your time, much appreciated :)

A better\stronger PSU is better system.

In sli or crossfire is a good idea to use the exact same gpu
wink.gif

Dont use GTX580 and GT210 for SLI.

Now notice that,

Dont ever update bios with in windows!

The good steps are,

Download the most recent bios for your motherboard.

Plug a usb flash drive in your pc (format the flash drive).

Extract the bios in the flash drive.

Restart,enter bios,set optimize defaults,save,exit,let windows run.

Restart, run q-flash,update bios from flash drive, restart, enter bios set optimize defaults, save exit, let windows run.

Now restart and do the normal personal changes in bios.

As for the warranty,my friendly advice is to enjoy as much as you can your pc,play work do anything you like and dont bother too much.

If is not broken don try to fix it!! :)

Just thought I'd post and update and a thank you.

I've run the system for about a week now at stock on the processor and gpu and its been perfect, not a single hitch.

I've installed drivers up to 280.33 without problem but when I try to install 285.27 I get the same BSOD so I'm just going to skip that driver and try the next release.

Now I know the system is stable again, I'll dial in my previously stable 3.8ghz OC and keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Panais,

Unfortunately still having some issues.

I had to upgrade my drivers to 285.38 to play Battlefield 3 and I'm getting BSOD's again on bootup.

I have done some further investigating and found that if I disable my second GPU the GT210 which is running my 2 other monitors (not in SLI though obviously) the system boots up fine which may point to a faulty GT210 but if I take out the GTX580 and use just the GT210 it works fine too so its something to do with them both running at the same time.

The BSOD im getting is nvlddmkm.sys

Hope you can help

Hey,

As far as I know yes I had everything setup correctly but I recently had to reformat and reinstall my OS because of an unrelated problem and I have been able to install all NVidia drivers right up to the current 295.51's without any issues what so ever.

So I didnt really get to the bottom of the issue it just resolved itself really.
