Internal HD power adapter for external use.

Years back, being cheaper than external drives I had bought an internal drive as a backup. I also bought an USB to IDE/SATA kit in order to make the backup with. Well the kit seemed to be problematic and so I scrapped it and bought another one only to find the same problem.
it then occurred to me that perhaps the problem is that though the kit has a power supply the HD did not have power going to it--it only attached to the 2 SATA parts.
So I was wondering, how do I get power to it? What is the adapter for such a thing called and does it exist?

The two connectors on the right are power, far right , SATA, center.
The connector you have marked power is not power.

On some drives a connector for jumpers is in that position.

What model drive are you using?

The pins you marked power actually are not for power. Those are for jumpers used to set the HDD for various conditions, such as use on XP; Win 7 doesn't require any jumpers. If you applied power to those pins, there is a good chance you have fried the HDD.

The actual power connector is the 15 pin connector on the right. If it appears the "kit" isn't delivering power to the HDD, it could be the "kit" is defective.

Another possibility is you haven't initialized and formatted the HDD.

Don't put any power to those 4 little pins. You will Toast that hard drive.

If you have a free SATA port on the MB, you could just run some long extended power & data cables to your HD.

Also ther are several external Docking stations that you can just slip a HD into using it externally.

I just had a thought (I know, scary). Is the "kit" you got just a cable that looks something like this?

If so, it won't run a 3.5" HDD. Those are intended for 2.5" HDDs

Slick idea Lady Fitz,

Too bad it is for 2.5" laptop HD's. The two USBs just can give enough power.

I had one of these hooked up at one time, but I don't think they will work with the higher speed 3.5" HD's

Nope, that's for converting an old IDE HDD to SATA.
