Hello there,

I have an internal Western Digital HDD that I used to connect to my laptop via a sata to usb adaptor (company name: KONG). Recently it stopped working for no reason - I tried it in 2 PC's.

Any idea have to fix it? Thanks in advance. :geek:

Does the drive still work on any SATA connector?
Those Sata 2 USB connectors are rather susceptible to static charges.

Thanks for your fast response. If you ask if it works as a "real" internal HDD, connecting it via SATA in a PC, then I don't know since I haven't connected it to anything else than a laptop and a PC (both via USB).

I asked so we could exclude the drive itself as the error source. No need to replace the adapter if the HDD itself doesn't work. That's why I suggest you find out if the drive itself still works 100% and go from there. When my 500GB external drive gave up (Element from BestBuy) it was just the power supply which was shorted out after 1 year. I simply got a cheap encasement (Rosewill ~$18-20) which came with a standard power supply (the kind you'd find in every dollar store :D so it still serves as my primary backup drive.

Well I am not sure the drive works because as I said it doesn't react good even via sata connection.

Any other help? I really don't wanna lose my data!

Does the drive even spin up?
If it doesn't work on SATA either, it's not just a connection issue anymore.
If you don't trust yourself enough to do that, find a friend who is somewhat tech savvy.
You need to take the HDD out of the encasing and connect it internally to a PC (at least the appr. cables need to be connected....just make sure not to short anything out)
If the drive still doesn't work, it's most likely history :(

Thanks again for response DG.

The HDD doesn't work internally either, although it spins (both when it is connected via USB or SATA). Seems it is not a connection issue, yeah.

But I really don't wanna miss my files, is there anything left to try?

Update: I went to my local store and they told me that I may have to F disk it. I don't know what that is... Can I take my files back after I do it?

Fdisk is a DOS utility to (re) partition a drive and to rewrite the MBR (master boot record)
It is intended for drives with FAT/FAT32 Type partitions. Anyhow after repartitioning the only chance to get your data back would be to reconstruct the old partition tables (basically restore the drive to its current state) which doesn't get you anywhere.

Can you see the drive in Disk Management at all? If so, could you post a screenshot?

Just to confirm, when you tried this drive on a SATA connection, did you remove it from the case and connect a SATA cable and power cable to it? Also did it show up in the BIOS screen as detected and the correct size?
