Internet Connection Issue - not router

Good Day,

This week I upgraded to Win7 from a Vista machine using HP's free upgrade that came with the laptop we got on 9-1. Upgrade went fine, but couldn't connect to the internet. The laptop was seeing and communicating with the router, just no internet on the back end. The laptop DOES get a usable connection when I boot in Safe+Networking mode, and I am posting from that laptop now. But obviously my wofe would like to be in standard mode.

I have tried to reinstall the driver for the adapter, I have tried to uninstall and re-install the adapter. I have reset the WinSock settings (I think I was doing that correctly...I have uninstalled Bonjour...and several other things that quite honestly I forget.

Here are a couple other clues to this puzzle. When in conventional logon, the Ethernet adapter also does not work when the laptop is hard-wired to the router. When in conventional, I can get a response when I ping Google, the yellow triangle and exclamation goes away, but I still get no usable connection.

When I had updates under Vista that included IE8, the connection issue also showed itself. I would go to a restore point before this update, and the machine would work again. Obviously, system restore with a new upgrade to Win7 really isn't an option, or is it?

I know this isn't the OS, nor is it probably IE8, but omething associated with the updates or the upgrade that is preventing a connection, but that goes away when I boot up in safe mode.

I know it's probably something running in conventional boot-up that is running, but what exactly would I look for that would be there then and not in Safe mode?

Thanks for any and all assistance you can give me.

First, I would like to welcome you to the Seven Forums.

Could you please post results of ipconfig (open command prompt, type ipconfig /all) when logged in normally, not on the safe mode w. networking.

Try a system restore to back before you made the update?

To do this click Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System restore. You should be able to find a calendar with restore points. Select one and make sure to save documents. It will then restart and you will be brought back before your update. No documents will be affected.

Hope this helps!

I'm not fimiliar with this router, but from the ipconfig you listed above it seems to not be giving out an IP adress. If it is working with 3 other computers it could be that there is a windows firewall that is blocking it. Try turning windows firewall off and see what happens. Also try going to the router's settings and see if it has the IP adress of your computer blocked.

It works in safe mode, therefore it is a problem with software.

Try updating and installing the newest drivers for your network card. What is the network card?

If your router works with other computers then look at your network adapter first and foremost.

Firewall is not going to cause this.

Update your network card drivers.

LordBob,

Thanks, and do you mean the adapter? I am using an Atheros5700 b/g....I got the Win7 driver from HP site for this, thought it had installed the latest driver, but not sure...how can I tell, and do I also need to get the latest driver for the ethernet card as well?

You may want to try removing their driver and use the w7 default. Works for my adapters.

Your ipconfig shows you have IPv6 enabled. It is known to cause some connection issues. You could try to uncheck Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6) in connection properties.

You could also try renewing the connection. Open command prompt, give the command ipconfig /release and after that ipconfig /renew.

If you disable IPv6 just be mindful that you'll lose the Homegroup networking abilities.

If your router won't support this protocol then either update it's firmware, or think of buying a model which does offer that support as it's 'here to stay' and is a feature of the new operating system.

Microsoft, true to form, appear to be having numerous issues with networking hardware and W7.

Firewall could definitely cause this. All they do is run application-specific, IP-specific, and port-specific rules. If you can get ping to work (And I'd try traceroute, too - run a command prompt, do "tracert google.com", see if it makes it to trace complete.) and if your browser works in safe mode when the firewall and other services and software are presumably off, it could be just the firewall. It is certainly an application problem. Could honestly be as simple as accidentally clicking the wrong button the one time a firewall prompts for an access rule for a browser or for port 80.

Likewise, anti-virus/malware programs seem to come prepared to do the same nowadays in creating application-specific networking rules, so I'd check those, too, and not just the firewall.

I'd take a look at what services are running and what applications are loaded at start-up first and foremost to try and find the culprit.
