Thx

Done the bit at the beginning (tried to uninstall KB2729029) and uninstall failed

Yup done the last one and it fails update already installed

Cant sensibly restore to an earlier point. I never use IE and I only need it because some other software I wanted to use requires it. I only restore points for about 4 months historically

I have no idea when this PC last had IE on it. I might just have a backup somewhere but . . . . .

I found this for uninstalling other updates-

KB2952664 won't uninstall

However, the script that was used to solve the problem doesn't even have the KB the guy was trying to uninstall. I don't know if he just ran that script or modified it.

I tried to uninstall the KB2729094 with WUSA in the hope that the log file might give me a clue as to why it wont uninstall. So

wusa /uninstall /kb:2729094 /log:C:\temp\WUSA
produces an error message
Installer encountered an error 0x800b0100
No signature was present in the subject

It produced 2 files wusa.dpx and wusa neother of which are text files and I have no idea how to read them

So,
- How to di fix the uninstall error?
- How do I read the log files?

There's all kinds of answers out there if search on it. However, I found this which might be useful-

To view the Windows Update Standalone Installer event log, follow these steps:
Click Startwindows icon , type event viewer in the Start Search box, and then click Event Viewer in the Programs list. In Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, on the Start screen, type event viewer, click Settings, and then click View event logs under Settings.

Notice icon If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

In Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, and then click Setup.

Setup events appear in the middle pane.

In the Actions pane, click Filter Current Log.

In the Event sources list, click to select the WUSA check box, and then click OK.

Thanks for all your suggestions but it is all taking too much time. I have given up and did a repair install last night and will let the 173 Windows updates chug on in the background. I currently have IE8 on the machine so hopefully the updates including IE11 will install OK. Hopefully this will fix everything.

The repair reinstall solved a number of issues bit not the IE9,IE10,IE11 issue.

Resolution of this issue is discussed further (and solved) in [SOLVED] - Windows Update - Cant install IE10 (KB2786081 fails to install) | Page 2 | Sysnative Forums and involved installing KB2670838.

That thread then digresses to a problem with MSCONFIG destroying the boot record which was resolved by CHKDSK (all options) of the entire HDD and a boot repair.

Good luck to anyone reading this with a similar problem - its a pig!
