Internet Explorer 9 Problem

My sister has a Dell Inspiron 15.6" laptop, and I custom-installed Windows 7 Professional on there for her (it came with Home Premium).

I got all her programs transferred from our family computer and it worked perfectly until I upgraded it to IE9. What ends up happening is that there's a weird black bar on the far right side of the screen - even if you have it in window mode and try adjusting the window, that bar is always there. It shifts the entire screen over a few pixels but the mouse is set to its "normal" position - as in, you have to click and drag in that black box to use the scroll bar, and for clicking links you have to move the mouse off to the right by that amount. Needless to say it's very frustrating.

For the time being I rolled-back to IE8, and will keep my sister on that until I figure out how to fix 9. (She doesn't know much about computers, she tends to just use them the way I set them up for her)

As you can see that's the initial setup. I tried going into Internet Options and doing a complete factory reset of IE, I even disabled it in the control panel and re-enabled it. None of that worked.

Anyone else had this problem? I can't seem to figure out what the heck is going on. That bar is there for any website you go to - and as you might notice, the "compatibility view" button is completely gone, and compatibility view itself does not work.

Did you follow the prerequisites for installing IE9? Does the black bar continue to appear even after going through the basic configuration steps for IE9? Have you tried changing themes? Are all drivers up to date? Some other thoughts in this Microsoft article:

Have you by any chance been using the screen magnifier?

Press the Win-U key combo, turn it on while the IE window is maximized, and then turn the magnifier off.

noticed that your taskbar is not as wide as standart windows 7 taskbar and you have show desktop icon and quick launch that is not in windows 7. what mods do you use? maybe there is conflict with IE9.

Quick Launch is part of Windows 7, it's just not there by default. Search on this forum for how to enable it. So that means no, I'm not using any sort of mods.

I installed IE9 through Windows Update, it didn't have me to prerequisites, so I assume all the proper stuff was there.

No I haven't tried changing the theme, I could do that though - I know my sister changed it from the default Windows 7 one to one of the themed ones that uses Aero but has a desktop slideshow.

Unfortunately my sister left to a summer program for about 3 weeks and took the laptop with her, so I can't try any of your suggestions right now. I was mainly curious if anyone has seen or experienced a similar problem.

I figured it out. Her laptop has two video options - an AMD Radeon dedicated card or the built in Intel HD Graphics... and apparently having it set to "high performance" (which uses the AMD card), it has that black bar. If I tell it to use the Intel onboard graphics, it works fine.

So for now, I'm just using the onboard graphics for Internet Explorer. Not sure why I should NEED to, though...

You might want to contact AMD and make sure you have the latest driver and/or
their tech support to see if they have an answer.

Does the behavior change if you go into tools > internet options > advanced and check the first checkbox to enable software acceleration (which disables GPU acceleration)? I've seen issues where certain "secondary" graphics chipsets don't trigger the automated checking of this box that IE9 would normally have done on installation because the primary adapter works properly, which was probably enabled at the time of install, thus the check passed at that time for graphics chipset/driver compat with IE9 acceleration. Because of this, the check on IE9 install fails to do this (and you end up with graphics oddities using the secondary adapter).

It would be interesting to know what ATI/AMD video chipset was secondary on that model.
