Internet Explorer corrupt, deleted, or otherwise inoperative!

Hi Everyone,

I have an interesting dilemma in my Windows 7 x64 Professional installation, it seems that Internet Explorer has 'disappeared' (or at least the 'useful IE files' have!).

I cannot open Internet Explorer, it's icon has changed to the standard 'blank' icon, and clicking on said icon only presents the browse dialogue.

Here is a screen capture of Program Files showing the files in the Internet Explorer folder (clearly there is no iexplore.exe icon!)

Similarly here is a screen capture of Program Files (x86)

A glimpse into 'Windows Features' reveals that there is no entry at all for Internet Explorer!

One of the side effects of the missing files (from the respective Internet Explorer folders) is that every time I open a new folder in Windows it inevitably opens in a new window (despite my folder settings clearly showing that this should not be the case!).

I attempted to implement a fix for the folders opening in a new window and got the error message below -

I have attempted a System Restore, however unfortunately the Restore failed. Furthermore I have downloaded the standalone IE11 executable; whilst it runs (and 'installs') ultimately IE is still corrupted and unusable (basically no files are changed).

If anybody knows how to fix this issue can you please share?

I guess a repair installation will get you set, however, wait for more experienced response as I have no experience with this type of installation (I don't know if it can be destructive).

Did you rename this file ?
If so rename it back without the "_OLD..

If that does nothing yep either a repair install or clean install is in order,

Never run reg cleaners which I believe AVG has a browser cleanup I can't remember :/

I have much more files and several other folders in IE folder both x86 and x64.

Trashzone: what's your stance with ccleaner?

Hi,
I see no need for ccleaner personally but many do,
I'm fairly neutral on it windows has many built in tools to clean up the system,
I have in the past seen a lot of issues with it's reg cleaning abilities but those were probably corrupt systems anyway ?

The sandbox entry is an interesting one in the same picture I posted so there are more things going on than mentioned in the thread
This is all self inflicted damage by a rogue utility being used it's just a matter of figuring out which one and learning not to use it in the future after a clean install if the repair install does not work

Hi Everyone,

Since making my original post I have copied the files that were missing from the Internet Explorer folders (both x86 and Standard) from a healthy computer and pasted them into the folders on the 'unhealthy' computer.

After doing so the Internet Explorer icon has been restored, however now when I go to start the program I get the message below -

I have also performed a System File Check to no avail, rebooted, and attempted to run IE again...once more with the results shown in the picture above.

Here is the CBS Log File which may assist with further diagnosis of the issue.

ThrashZone: I am yet to rename the file that you suggested, and will report back with my results once I do so.

Any further assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Thrashzone,

I renamed the file that you kindly pointed out (using an Ubuntu live OS; I couldn't rename the file without using a 3rd party OS) however unfortunately Internet Explorer is still presenting the 'ordinal 701' message.

If you have any other suggestions please share.

Hi All,

I copied the file iertutil.dll (C:\Windows\System32) from a healthy computer and pasted it into the relevant location on the 'unhealthy' computer, however now I am receiving the message shown below -

Furthermore I performed a System File check again, both in normal and safe boot modes, however I am seeing a message along the lines of 'Windows found errors but cannot fix them'!

Any further suggestions are welcome.

Run sfc 3 times in a row post the log files again.

Warning: this fix is specific to the above corruptions only, do not run these fixes if you do not have these corrupt files.

• Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
• Download SFCFix.zip from the below link, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip – do not rename it.
• download this version: SFCFix(x64version)
• Save any open documents and close all open windows.
• On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.

• Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.

• SFCFix will now process the script.
• Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.

• Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please – put tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC /SCANNOW

• Right click on the Start button
• Click on Command prompt (Admin) => Press Yes on the prompt
• Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
• post the new CBS.log file when complete
