internet issues on new netbook

Just bought a gateway netbook, for some reason my wifi stopped working. I cant connect via ethernet either. It shows that im connected and you would think it would work but there is no internet activity. I tried to ping a site in cmd but it came back with nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try to uninstall your firewall and virus software?
