K so im gonna throw a weird one at you guys... I have my network set up on my laptop so that im connecting to my wireless router. I also have a hamachi connection but have it set to public... now it seems that some times when i go on (mainly at night) i will lose my connection to the internet however when i go to network and sharing center it says that im gettting internet from my router but where it shows the network connection map (just above active networks) it shows that i have no internet connection i also looked at my network status indicator on my start bar and it shows that im connected with an internet signal... I have now clue whats going on it randomly denies me internet and grants me within a 10 min period and repeats...so im wondering if theres a fix for this aside from doing a factory restore

Had this problem with my old xp laptop what it turned out was actually happening there was the computer would just randomly decide to drop the ip and subnet information. (possibly an adapter or power management issue) anyhow I was able to solve it by going to the advanced options and manually forcing the the ip, subnet, and gateway for the device.

my situation has gotten worse, my ethernet adapter seems to not be picking up any wireless networks around me - i can only plug into the lan..... i know at this point i need to do a factory restore but is there a way to fix this? i dont want to end up losing a ton of important files

At this point, set it back to auto detect (undo what I said above)
and uninstall the wireless and all related software

I need to know exactly what wireless device you are using so I can point you to the most recent version of the software and driver for it.
We're going to remove it, along with whatever settings or link libraries have gotten screwed up and reinstall it from the beginning, In order to walk you through that I'm going to need more specific information about your computer.

If the wireless is built in, just knowing the model of the computer should be enough
example: pavilion dv6000us

We should be able to get the device working like it did originally by removing it and reinstalling it.

...like I said we can't help you with that without more specific information about what we are dealing with here. If you are using a wireless card I will need that model information.

If you don't know how to provide that information. We can deal with that too, unfortunately it's about 1:30 am here right now and I need to call it a night hopefully someone else will pick this up, if not I won't be able to respond again for 8 to 12 hours.

I would still suggest attempting to update the device, restoring to defaults simply put you back with the same thing that developed a problem before. I wouldn't hurt to attempt to update it, just for future prevention.

it would seem that hamachi is causing the issue, windows 7 sees hamachi as the primary stable network because it is constantly running whereas with my wireless i connect to 3 different networks daily...
