Yea it says in the network icon that there is an internet access.

theres the troubleshooter, but it's not going to do anything that you haven't already tried, so maybe a restore point would be beneficial. any opinions from the "peanut gallery" since I've never needed to use a restore pt. for a network/internet problem, so I don't know exactly what type of settings It might save/replace... ?

From the start bar, type "system restore" then click on the icon in your jump list ... select the restore point, then let er whirl...

you can goto the start menu and in the search box type "restore" and then enter - this will open the "Restore System Files and Settings window"


Click {Next>} and a listBox should appear with the various dates and times that restore points have been saved. You are going to want to choose a point BEFORE you experienced ANY problems.

After selecting the restore point you want (several days back) Click the scan for affected programs - and see what it lists in the box after a brief scan, and let me know before proceeding

usually not too long, but thats good. Now you can close that window (that said nothing found) and on the system restore window underneath that you have already selected the date from, you only need to click the {Next>} button and confirm that you want to restore the machine to the previous state. It will reboot, you don't need to do anything else until it reboots.

okay... are you in win7 environment (with an error message), or prior to logging in it showed the error. Lemme know and I'll see if I can see if this helps point out what the issue is or if its unrelated

yeah, what av software did you have installed.....this looks like a permissions problem that might have been caused by the av software. I'm trying to check into it (I may have up to 3 potential solutions if this is the case) first we need to see what it is for sure....so the av software name that you just removed?

I never use System Restore (disclaimer: I'm covered by full system backups) so I can't be of much help with that. But a Google search does seem to support the 80070005 error being an access permissions problem.

As for the original issue - that of having Internet connectivity but nothing working in browsers or anything else - right from the start I've been wondering whether the laptop is configured to use a proxy server (which doesn't exist).

The answer to that question would be found in Control Panel -> Internet Options under the Connections tab. The small window listing dial-up and VPN connections should be empty, but of particular interest is the button that says LAN Settings. This opens another window where a proxy server may be configured, which is then used globally by all Internet applications on the system (not just by Internet Explorer).

Normally, all checkboxes in this window should be unchecked.

Do you have UAC on or off currently? Off is going to be the preferred state in this temporary case.

What I believe happened, is that Kasperski utilized some type of protection method, to avoid being altered by a virus. This protecting extends to the restore point data archives which were "guarded" in such a manner that you (and more importantly any virus impersonating your user id) can't alter the restore points. Otherwise, restoring them would leave security gaps for said virus to easily exploit. So now with the AV uninstalled (or most of it at least) the system cannot access the restore file, or a portion thereof, leaving the restore process utterly incomplete, as noted by the error code you mentioned. That code, again seems to refer to a lack of privileges by the "user" or rather the system trying to open the file. So It appears it may have either not worked at all (restore point) or only in part. I doubt even the "ADMINISTRATOR" account has the privileges to carry out the aforementioned procedure, the best sol'n I read is not a step towards fixing your internet, unless it too is connected to the permission error, but it may be able to remove the unusable System Restore Points, and restart the system restore process. As a final option we may need to do a repair install.

For anyone else who may be interested, I found the following to be the general case:

Briefly, If UAC is off, This issue often resolves by switching restore points "off", rebooting and switching them back to "on". But this may not always work, as prior cases have reveled. :huh:
