Solved Internet Sharing with router

I got a friends permission to use their wireless internet. I can only connect in a certain spot in the house. I want to connect wirelessly and then share the connection through the ethernet into MY wireless router, and broadcast through my house. How would I go about doing this??

You can use certain routers and or WiFi devices to pick up that signal and then Re-Broadcast it. They are called WiFi Repeaters. Some routers have that feature, others don't, and they make specialized devices for this.

But in the end why not just get your own connection.

Yes, I have verified this with my friend and he is ok with it. The reason I dont have my own connection is because Im still in college and living with my parents and they dont have the money and I dont have a job. My friend doesnt know what kind of router he has but I am using a Toshiba C655 Laptop to connect and Im trying to share the connection through the ethernet port and connect that ethernet cable to my Linksys E1200 Router through the wan/internet port to broadcast as its own connection.

In order for you to accomplish this, you will need to purchase a few routers and then update the firmware with ddwrt software, and some cat5e cables.

But, by the time you do all this you'll save money by getting you own broadband connection. Right now CenturyLink has an offer for DSL @ 10 megs for $19.95 a month for 5 years. You can't get any cheaper than that I don't think. You'll end up spending more than $20 to do what you want to do.

Even ad hoc doesn't allow for pass through from wireless to Ethernet, ad hoc is shared wireless to wireless connection not for sharing to a wired connection. What you want to do here is not possible using normal procedures and would not be reliable even if you could make it work.

It will not work to pick up partial weak signal from neighbor, magically go through your machine then back out of Ethernet to a router then the router magically becomes functional? You couldn't pay me enough to make that set up work and it's certainly not conventional or something you can expect to work reliably.

You can however, pick up the wireless signal then rebroadcast this signal so your other wireless devices can pick it up. I believe this is what you want to accomplish anyway correct? No need to push this through a wired connection then to another router.

Another router is not required for this to work, just some user input at the command prompt and you must use a proper Windows 7 approved driver that has the Msoft Virtual WiFi mini port adaptor installed.

I got it working. I simply shared the wireless connection through the ethernet port and connected the ethernet port to one of the 4 open ports on the router and then redirected all the traffic to itself. Not sure how I did it, but it worked.
