Internet turns 40

This month marks the 40th anniversary of the birth of the Internet.
What began as the Arpanet project tested in a UCLA lab for the first time Sept. 2, 1969, is now the Internet.

The front end of the Internet everyone is familiar with, the World Wide Web, was created in just the last 15 or so years. One of the people responsible for the Web as we know it today is Roy T. Fielding, who works for Day Software in Newport Beach

Fielding co-authored the HTTP standard in the early 1990s as a researcher at UC Irvine.

Hi there

I think you (the OP) were (are ?) a bit premature.

The USA WASN'T the first in this arena.

True that Arpanet provided a Network which of course was the underlying basis for a global system (TCP/IP etc) but it really was the development of the HTTP protocol that made the Internet into what we mean by The Internet today.

You can have zillions of Networks but these aren't really "The Internet".

True credit should be given to some English guy Tim Berners Lee back in 1989 .

A Belgian bloke (there are others besides "Hercule Poirot" BTW) Robert Cailliau also worked together with Tim at CERN in Switzerland to create a "Browsable" system whereby the user could connect at will. This was released in December 1989 so we're actually not quite there yet but near enough.

It's a shame but why is it the USA NEVER or conveniently seems to forget that a lot of stuff was invented / developed in countries OUTSIDE the USA.

(If you ever saw a total re-write of History by Hollywood - look at its account of how the Enigma machine was both discovered and retrieved. It wasn't BY THE US as portayed in the movie - total disregard for history but it was by the Polish underground. When the British notified their US allies the US thought "what a load of rubbish" and weren't interested until much much later - but it certainly DID shorten WWII).

Mind you if we are ranting against Hollywood - do you remember their real geographic porker.
The film Krakatoa East of Java -- although a great movie anybody with an ounce of knowledge of the region would know that Krakatoa was WEST of Java.

The internet as we know it now wasn't even available until 1989 and later once opened up for the general public following the end of the Cold War era. With the changes since we now have Globalization and a Global ecomony where the internet has played a tremendous role in commerce in general.

Internet was working (although with not so convenient browsers) back in 1989 after a fashion -- I remember at the time the fall of the Berlin wall (nov 1989) and the German re-unification (Mar 1990) were covered on the fledgling internet at the time as well as "traditional media".
